I haven't read through all the replies, but mixing 3 songs is kind of a weird idea for a talent show. I mean, most people will sing and dance and take up 3 minutes. You're gonna mix 3 trance songs? I'm a dj and and appreciate the lifestyle, but to some random kids that is gonna be awkward to watch.
If you're dead set on doing it, I'd suggest what other people have said...do some cool scracthes, cuts and sampling for 3 minutes and call it a day. No one is gonna care if you fade in and out of trance records. |

dude...
u got a serious problem...
desparate times, desperate measures...
borrow 3-4 more turntables, hook em up to all ur stuff, and get more mixers.
that way u look pimp...
like someone above suggested,
get an awesome live-set, that will wow the audience, and put it in an Mp3 player under the table, and hook it up.
act like ur doing something...
u'll win for sure... ha ha ha! :p
i'd never do that... hell, i'd never even enter the competition, but it'd just be funny to see what happens...
ha ha, like skip said, we want a video |

pvdalltheway dont fukn listen to anyone that says dont do it. expressing ureself and showing people how much you love something is fantastic.
i did a short mix at school once and i premixed most of it, i wish i hadn't because half the time i was standin therr pretendin to play with and i felt like a dick, but people still thought it was sikk.
i do suggest you do something with lights or something tho. just get an atmosphere so they can feel what your playing a bit better. if you werr using cdj's i would suggest you use a wav editor to trim down some tracks then burn em 2 a cd and mix em, but coz ure usin decks jus make sure you dont play a track for too long.
i know exactly what you mean about havin all hip hop heads at ure school and people used to think i was f***n idiot jus coz i listened to trance, thats why i take every oppurtunity i can to show em sum really good trance and show em how much i love it, now even if they dont like it that much they still respect me for how much love i have in my music.
technique wise, as i sed dont play a track for too long and maybe do a short mix somewher so the change in track is a little more noticeable and do sum eq dropping like cut out the bass for a cuple beats and drop it back in and try sum cutting, like have ure tracks beat matched and play beat 1 of track 1 beat 2 of track 2 beat 3 of track 1 and beat 4 of track 2 using the cross fader, you know what i mean.
i suggest you play some vocal trance in therr as u sed and maybe ask around if therr is a trance track that a few of ure friends know and like, also alot of my friends that dont listen to trance love the harder and faster stuff so i reckon get a bit of that in therr aswell. auctuali i jus thought of a track you know that Mr. Lonely rework by Bang Bros. i think, that has a hard flava and every one knows the original track, but it maybe difficult having such a contrast of tracks in such a short mix. im talking too much now so i'll stop.
jus go 4 it mate and tel us how it goes. people will apreciate you as long as you try ure best and show ure love for what you do.
peace. |

Man you got to sit back and think a bit about what you are doing. Not because you shouldn't do it, on the contrary, no one got anywhere in their life because they stayed at home playing records to themselves.
Ok, so you are not likely to have PVDs booking agency turn up on the off chance but that's not what it's about.
For real though, I think you have to sit back and think about what you are actually going to spin.
If I were in your shoes then I would be looking at who is going to be there, what they might like and then take what you find and make something creative out of it.
Even if it is pants music it's still an oportunity to learn what it feels like DJing under pressure.
Do a live mega mix of their favourites with short parts of each song. No scratching as to be honest it would probably sound like arse if you don't know how to do it.
If they don't know what you are doing they will get bored real quick so at least give them something they can relate to even if it's crap music.
You are not going to educate people with trance this way, you will just alienate yourself in a way that is not desirable and may cause embarassment to yourself.
Start planning your set new as you are not going to be able to read the crowd as there is no dance floor as I understand it.
Don't get me wrong, it's hard to mega mix and you don't have much time to practice but it might be a better option than any other.
Just practice whatever you do and think of your audience. It's not always about how into Trance you are and into Hip Hop or RnB they are. If you look down on them for their music you are just as bad as they are.
Go out and entertain them. It's a lot more rewarding than making yourself another die hard trance martyr.
Cheers
