How do you figure?
One option, as infinity HIGH pointed out, is putting the DJ booth in a location that won't (can't!) be the center of attention, as the old Boa did. I found those parties MUCH more fun - it was a much friendlier environment because people weren't so bloody zoned-out on the dancefloor staring blankly at the DJ.
Even if the DJ was hidden away in some back room, they could still be reading the crowd - give 'em a video monitor or something.
"Interaction" to me means the type of stuff that you'd see from Danny Tenaglia or Danny Howells. Actually ing leaving the DJ booth, going out onto the dance floor to dance and socialize, and being part of the crowd (at least for a few minutes). Interaction is NOT waving your hands around like an idiot in the DJ booth or "pointing" to the audience. Even worse is the sickening Jesus pose.
Oddly enough, those idiotic types of "interaction" all seem to be done by the trance DJs, not house or techno - maybe that's one of the things that got me hating trance in clubs. I just can't ing stand looking at people waving their hands in the air. It's NOT DANCING, it looks more like some stupid cult or a televangelist audience when the crowd does it, and just plain attention-whoring pathetic when the DJ does it. |

:haha: :haha:
*smiles and waves*
"OMG!! He's interacting with us!! He's SUCH a good DJ!!1111"
As for a DJ not interacting...uhhh, look at DJ's like Digweed (and many others) who barely interact with the crowd and still manage to blow the roof off of a club. |

WHOA now...I'd *never* say that interaction means a DJ is "good"...and no one said that non-interaction makes someone "bad" or unable to create a vibe.
most people here seem to simply be saying that a DJ who appears to be enthusiastic, who appears to be enjoying themselves and who is directly interacting with the crowd (outside of the music) positively contributes to the vibe. that's it.
you guys are reading WAY too much into this... |

agreed! Industry had some of the most legendary parties in the world and they rarely put the dj front and centre. The booth was past the stage in a little cubby hole with people dancing in front. You could see the crowd from there but no one could really see you. In fact the last 6 months of the club had the dj on the stage itself which my friends and i to this day say changed the entire vibe of the club.
Guv never used to start putting djs on stage till they got the armin van buurins of the world to start playing there. And yes, this makes it more like a rock concert and less like a club. |

I dont pay to "see" them. I pay to hear them. I dont care what djs look like, what labels they wear or how many times they dance on the turntables or perform magic tricks.
I just wanna hear some good music! |

I mean someone might come at me with a genre-technicality here... but Carl Cox @ guv 9yr seemed to be interacting... dancing to the big tunes he was dropping... one of my favorite sets of all time Ritchie Hawtin @ Dancevalley 2001... he came out of his usual zombie-with-headphones like state and was into it...
Some djs have an 'on-stage' presence.. some don't... some people like the presence some don't... but both skill and persona def. play a role in how the crowd is going to reacting....
just my opinion
All the crowd interaction in the world couldn't have saved benassi's set for me on sat :D if you liked it and had fun.. cool... i personally found it boring... but his interaction was, at least, creative...
