| i definitely think it makes a difference. It wouldnt ruin my night if the dj didnt give a flying %^&*, but it does take a bit away from the atmosphere! i mean, ur going specifically to see a dj perform. When they are interactive with the crowd its kind of like a 'thank you'. I dunno, its kind of like a slap in the face when the dj is being cold to the ppl in the crowd who paid to see him and r screaming his name. It kind of gives the message, " im so good, i dont need to care to please u all that much". If i had to choose between 2 shows, id go for the one with the passionate, enthusiastic dj that gives back to the adoring fans that come for him/her (given i know that in advance). I was disappointed at a tiesto show once. But ive noticed at all the shows of his ive seen. he just seemed to have lost it. And ive found that i dont get that psyched for any coming appearances i hear of his. |

DJs are not rockstars....
You dont go to "see" them... you dont go to worship them. You dont go to scream their name. You go to hear the music, have fun with your friends etc.
The only time i scream is when the dj drops an amazing track or mixes in some crazy ass way. If i watch the dj its only to see what he is doing behind the decks ie) mixing, scratching etc. In other words, something to do with the music. This is why its so disappointing to me when i see djs with cd players. Its just not the same.
As for djs smiling, or flaling their arms or high fiving everyone, i dont give a flying !
It's all about the music |

I think there are a few elements to look at for a night.
1) Music itself
2) Interaction of the dj and how involved
3) The Night itself, ie venue and how busy it is
4) the time of the night and
5) the people around you and your past experience
I saw PVD 2 summers ago, he sat there, and mixed, looked down at the decks, back to his vinyl and mixed.....not into it at all. but thats him.
As for Piet, he was into it, but it REALLY only showed if your in the booth.
Now for me, for those that saw me at viva, maybe i was a little TOO into it. but hey, the music does it for ya.
Overall, VERY important in my opinion for OPINION of the dj, NOT for the music itself. but every little bit helps

BTW someone like Armin who actually LOOKS at you REALLY does a number on the night. Even though some ppl didn't like his LOL set, he played AWSOME and his interaction was amazing.
IE. signing everything and the bunch that was like "he looked at me" deal, its just awsome and very inspiring IMO.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw him at the Guv Barry. But then when I saw him in New York a couple weeks ago he was COMPLETELY opposite! He was dancing around, smiling, interacting a lot. I was impressed...and also really glad that he was having such a good time.
Also...I like all your points you made...couldn't have said it any better myself!
And lastly...yes I'm going to go on about Ferry some more...but I LOVE when he makes his *heart* sign down at us.
2 other things...when I saw his 8 hour set, in March 2003...I was all over the place dancing...but some of my friends were on stage and I would go visit them and dance. Ferry would come over to the side of the DJ booth...it felt like he was so close...and he'd look down, point, smile and make the heart.
Also...at Ultra Spin 7...I remember near the end of the night...I threw my hands up in the air at one point and was pointing at him, and no one else had their hands up like that. He looked down and pointed right at me. My heart almost stopped. I love him :)
But yea...I love when you can TELL a DJ sees you...throughout the night, you may throw your hands up, and he will too...but so will a million other people. When the crowd dies down, and you're the only one with your hands up there and the DJ looks at you and points, I love it b/c you know they're seeing you! |
