dj/crowd interaction

i got into an argument with a friend about this today.

ever go to a party and the crowd is just going insane cuz of what the dj's doing? or ever been to one where the dj just stands there and doesnt do anything other than listen to his headphones?

for instance...personally, if i remember correctly, Blank and Jones were pretty good with this during Labour of Love, Paul Oakenfold was pretty good a few months ago and AVB was awesome as well at L.O.L...however, Tiesto just stood there and didnt do much on canada day, and as awesome as piet's set was last week...all the energy was coming one way and that was TOWARD the stage from the crowd. i think Tyler actually did the best job in getting the crowd going when he was up there (credit to you for that).

i happen to think theres 2 elements that count at a party: 1. the music of course, and 2, how the dj interacts with the crowd and makes them go crazy.

can you guys think of dj's that are always into it with the crowd or djs that never do anything at all? specific events? just wanna hear what you guys think cuz my friend doesnt think that factor number 2 counts at all.

I like the "Jesus Crucifixion Pose" that DJs do.

It shows me they mean business.

If a DJ is having fun, dancing, moving - it adds to my enjoyment of their perforance (knowing that they're rocking out just as much as I am). It's about a collective experience - knowing that people are participating at the same emotional level as you.

^^^ LOL

Armin and Deko-ze come to mind...

all Armin has to so is smile and people go ing insane...Deko-ze is rockin' out behind the decks and it's infectuous. When you see the DJ having as much fun as you, how can that not be a good thing?

If DJ interaction didn't matter at all, then they may as well hide the DJ away in some room where no one can see them. It may not be important to SOME clubbers, but for others, it's a major part of the vibe for them.

I like Armin's flying the plane move!

And last time I saw him he climbed up on top of the table, which was on top of a balcony and started dancing, but continued reaching behind him over the table to keep mixing.
Awesome!

Ferry does good crowd interaction too. He always looks like he's having a blast, even if he's belting out similar track selection every gig. (That grin of his)

It makes the party more special when you see everyone having fun as much as you do.

That was at Bleu in Detroit back in October.
Great night, got to hang out with him afterwards at an afterparty!

I wish that someone would finally decide to do that. I'd be at their club every week.

So the fanboys and DJ whores won't show up... I'd rather party without them anyway. No offense to anyone here. Some DJs are respected because they consistently throw down good sets and talk to the audience to make the night more interesting, but most of the popular ones are just worshipped like rock stars; waving one's hands in the air frantically does not constitute crowd interaction or performance skill.
