some of the doctors from other countries speak better english than local doctors in States...i cant comment on Canada cos i have not had the "pleasure" of visiting many Docs in Canada. but yea my family Doc in Miami is about 56 57 yrs old and i swear he speaks like the donkey from Shrek. u cant understand a darn thing and the other young dood who is in the clinic with him and is from Ukraine speaks english almost prefectly. also in NY i had to go see a Doc about getting some meds for knee pain and stuff and the guy again spoke so fast and in a way that he confused himself but his assistant who looked like was from Indo-Pak region spoke excellent english.

i dont see english being a real issue here maybe i am wrong.

And my friend from argentina speaks better english than most canadians. In fact she often comments on the common grammatical errors we make.

when i was in N. Carolina a girl we were with slipped on a rock and split open her chin..bleeding everywhere. She had insurance, so we went to the closest hospital..and waited almost 4 hours. This is backcountry N.Carolina..not busy NYC, yet we still waited. Guess no where is perfect

and something needs to be done about immigrants with training unable to work in their choosen field. i knew a lady who was an O.B in Ukraine. She tried to come here as a doctor, but was unable to do so. Instead she had to re-apply as a nanny, which upon arriving in canada she had to work as a nanny for 2 years. when that was finished she tried to get into the courses necessary to get her MD here, but was constantly turned down. she was put at the bottom of the list, below kids trying for the first time to get in. I met her janitoring at the golf club. after 4 years of trying to get into the medical program, she was giving up

Yeah, some of the rules are a little strict for letting foreign trained doctors work here but in a way right fully so. The training they go through isnt necessarly the same or as good where they have come from, nor is everything the same here like malek stated.

Like I said. Our hospitals arent the greatest but not complete crap like a lot of you say. I hope you never really need care from a life threatening injury. you may die :wtf:  .

again, they put you in order of severity. My dad was dieing, he was seen . i had a cut and was fine, so I had to get in line. You have no idea howmany people go to the er for the dumbest and it holds up the process. Thats more of a problem then anything else!

sure it could use some work , but its definately not as horrid as most of you say. Its not super great anywhere else either.

Some of you have some weird expectations. lol i bumped my leg. i need treatment NOW!

not only the training and language isn't the same... their medical and criminal background got to be checked, you don't know what these guys did in their home country and got them to leave... we don't want others' rejects.

I don't know the particular woman you're referring to and I'm certainly not making any claims about her abilities - it's very possible that some qualified people really do slip through the cracks.

However, I hear enough sob stories about doctors and other professionals who aren't allowed to work here, but the people I hear them from always manage to casually dismiss the fact that medicine and laws aren't the same in every country and that the language barrier alone is often enough to cause problems. This is why we have international accreditation - many professionals from overseas CAN get their "normal" jobs here IF they've come from an accredited program.

We also have schools here that are not only willing to admit, but ecstatic about admitting intelligent students from overseas. And people in those countries know that - and they know that it is often not difficult for them to get financial aid. However, some choose to try and take the "back door" and go to a local school that is easier and perhaps cheaper, without realizing (I should say without bothering to do sufficient research) that it simply won't qualify them to get a job in Canada or the USA.

Again, I'm by no means suggesting that every qualified professional from overseas gets a job that matches their credentials. The problem in question, though, is greatly overstated and hideously oversimplified when touted by liberals as an excuse to lower the standards. Very often the problem is that these people simply can't speak fluent English - and quite frankly, I don't want to see a doctor that I can't understand and I'd be very uncomfortable getting operated on by a surgeon who has to make time-critical decisions and can't think of the right word for the instrument he/she wants. It's bad enough having to deal with these people when I call a tech support line or order my lunch, but it's absolutely unacceptable to have those people making life-or-death decisions for me.

The problem with our health care system here is NOT that we aren't allowing enough immigrants with medical degrees to work in it. We have those standards for a reason. The problem with our health care system is that it is run by the government, provided for "free", and as such leads to enormous waste, horrible inefficiency and bureaucratic red tape.

or if they come from proper channels. there are many who come from countries like Pakistan locked in a container on ships. that actually does happen. or they pay a ridiculous amount of money for fake passports and visas under fake names and they come into Canada and States. i know a few in States that have done this. now when they get here and they see that all the fairy tales they were told about States and Canada or anyother country for that matter arent really 100 % true they whine and complain about oh how they cant get a job in their field and what not. well if u had come through proper way with proper documents u wud not have a problem wud you now. Canada has a special programme for Doctors and Engineers in Pakistan where they can apply for work visa and what not based on their education work experience and things of that nature. its called a point system and u have to score i beleive 70 points in order to get Canadian work visa. my brother who lives in Brampton came to Canada 5 yrs ago based on this programe. his field is chemical eng. and for the first year he went through a bit of hardships only because he was looking for work in his field while working odd jobs and supporting his family and his english wasnt the greatest. but within a year he landed a job with uni lever and now is working 4 days a week making well over 55K a year.

Ah come on, you've never heard the term "Bramgladesh?" I think Brampton's population is about 80% from Pakistan or India. :p

You're very right about the earlier post though. I think Canada is already far too lax with respect to illegal immigrants and refugees - I just have no sympathy whatsoever for people who come into this country illegally and then complain about it. I understand if their lives were in their home countries and they just had to get out, but if you're going to do that, you take whatever you can get! Maybe if they spent more time applying for citizenship/permanent residence and less time bitching they'd actually have the jobs they want.

Make no mistake, this country was built on immigrants. HARDWORKING, LEGAL immigrants. I have nothing but respect for people who decide to take control of their lives and leave their home countries not knowing what awaits them, but those people should realize that this is a RISK, not a sure thing, and unlucky people may get the shaft.
