Subaru... call the dealership on Eglinton (near McCowan).

They have a used lot and you'll get great deals. I'll even take you.

Nat, have you considered a brand new Civic (maybe you could get a demo). I am not sure if they are out as yet, but have seen them around a couple of times, and they are awesome! I would suggest a Civic anyways, reliable and cost effective.

My car is a Civic and I really enjoy it.

No major problems with it, eventough I think I'm in for a major tuning in the summer. But it is a 2000. So time for all the detailed checks.

Yeah, an '02+ Subaru Impreza 2.5TS is a good suggestion for an entry-level Scooby. Typical Japanese econobox interior but well built, and that outstanding Subaru AWD system as the icing on the cake. Their Achilles heel though is that because of the design of their 50/50 split all-wheel-drive system, fuel economy is less than stellar. Now, don't get me wrong, it isn't terrible, but it's nothing like a Civic or Corolla would get.

Speaking of fuel economy, CanadianDriver recently did a fuel economy test and found that an '05 Civic averaged almost 4.9L/100km (that's 57mpg!).

Can't disagree with anything he said. I would say the Subaru would by far be the safest thing to drive in all weather conditions, but that's not really knock against how the other cars handle.

I sold my 97 Civic last year for almost 10 grand back to a dealership no less. Now I definitely could have gotten a few more grand in a private sale, but I was in the process of moving provinces and didn't have much time. The reason I bring this up is that eventually you will get another car, it's inevitable, so looking at how the car holds it's resale value is something else you should look at. My g/f on the other hand didn't do that with her first car, and got hosed overall on her craptastic Neon. She now drives a Civic... :happy2:

Winter safety?

Simple.

Winter tires.

The cheapest winter tires outperform the most expensive all-season tires. (APA and Consumer Reports)

Only people who don't believe that are ones who never had them.

No way am I ever going back to all-seasons in the winter. All-season tire drivers are the ones with flashing hazards/headlights slowing down traffic at soon as the first snowflake falls. Winter tire drivers are the ones they are pissed off at for passing them.

The Corolla is an awesome car! I absolutely love it! i had a rental for about a month and it handled like a beauty (excellent in the rain, i was doign 140 on the highway while it was raining and had no problems!)Not to mention its great on gas! Good factory sound system too :tongue2 ;)

Nissans are also great too! The Maxima or the Altima are amazing! although being a bit large arent too good on gas in the city. But they basically drive themselves!

One thing I do advise against are small car like the Echo, they are like a tin can on wheels, great on gas and everything but being very small and light they are not good for bad driving conditions! Even with good tires, with rain they are all over the place, add wind to that and its not a pleasant ride, this is highway experience, in the city it was still pretty slippery in the rain.

Go with any Honda. It just won car of the year & truck of the year. You just cannot go wrong, ya know?

My mom had a 03 corrola, and it was a great car, no problems with it all, really reliable and practical. I myself have had hondas and acuras my whole life and have never had any 'major' problems with them, really well built, reliable as hell, not pricey to fix/maintain and good on gas

i'd also check out the mazda 3....my sister has one, and for the money i don't think you can beat it ...plus i can get you x plan on it

Interesting how almost nobody is recommending any American cars.

My Mom had a Sunfire... it sucked... a lot of things broke on it, and she had < 100 000 km on it.
