What year is your Golf? They've been built in Mexico for the North American market for many, many years now. Unless you live in Europe or your Golf is older, your car was built south of the border.

don't they also have a certain amount coming from Germany each year - the "Wolfsburg edition"?

my brother owns a Jetta and I have to admit that although I love my Civic, I find that the VW is so much more comfortable for longer drives and handles better..

that being said, I don't think I would buy one any time soon.. the Civics are much more reliable! I only wish it had more power .. but Honda has fixed that with the new model, can't wait to test drive that one :)

oh and is it just me or does anyone else find Corollas boring? I know that they're also very reliable but I've always found them blah inside and out.. at least the Matrix has some excitement :)

I don't know why this is, but every time I end up behind a VW Golf, Bug, or Jetta, the driver is driving like a friggin' idiot. I'm not saying that everyone who drives these cars is a retard, but I've learned to instinctively avoid those cars on the road because they're involved in some stupid or careless act more than half the time I see them. Maybe it's just that people think they're a lot more powerful/manoeuverable than they really are.

VW drivers are even worse than Civic drivers. I don't think I could ever own one, just by virtue of the association.

I've had quite a different experience than you have. I have found that a lot of Civic and Corolla drivers don't know how to drive and I try and avoid them - but there are just SO many on the road.

I don't think anybody has mentioned the Mazda3 yet. Definitely worth considering - 'twas also once Car of the Year. ;)

Well that's the thing, there are millions of Civic and Corolla drivers out there, so the law of averages suggests that there will be several horrible drivers in those. VWs on the other hand (especially the Golf) are not that common.

But hey, just my observation! It could be region-related... I spend a lot of time on the 401/400.

It's because so many VW drivers seem to think "Oh, Volkswagen! German! Good! On par with BMW and Mercedes and Audi!" Entry-level German econoboxes. They are nothing special, and the Japanese economy cars walk ALL over them in terms of quality, fit & finish, and reliability.

There is absolutely NO reason to buy any Volkswagen of ANY kind. Even their performance vehicles, such as the GTI R32, weigh nearly 3600 pounds. Performance? off, VW.

Bernd Pietschreider drove VW into the ground (in my mind) with that stupid ing Phaeton that failed so incredibly miserably here. Who the hell would buy a VW over a Mercedes or BMW? Why the hell are you charging $30,000 for a Jetta that competes against Civics? Isn't that why Volkswagen Auto Gruppe owns Audi?

However, for all of those out there that must have "German luxury" in a cheap-ish package, that's why Mercedes has the B-Class, Audi has the A3, and BMW will soon have the 1-Series here.

I must admit I'd love to own an Audi A3 3.2 Quattro with DSG, or a BMW 130i. Hot hatches make me pitch a tent.

{edit} obligatory lol vw coilpacks lol window regulators

ha ha!

Could very well be region-related. I do most of my driving in Richmond Hill, Markham, 404 and Scarborough. :nervous:

How well has the interior held up? I hear that they've got terrible interior fit and finish.

the spec v is a pile of . Sure its kinda quick in a straight line but it was a major let down and they have major engine issues lol burn oil lol blown motors. Nissan has quite a lot of fit and finish issues aswell as motor issues with many of their cars.

Your best bet is a COROLLA OR CIVIC. If you can spring for the new 05 civic that would be the best. Great looking, great gas mileage, more power etc etc etc.

Ive had my 00 Civic SiR for 6 years now. Beat the living out of it. It just keeps begging for more.(Ive had an assortment of mods on it aswell) Its a great car. Looks the best out of any civic yet too.(the new ones are nice though. both much nicer then the 01-04, no offence.)

The focus is kinda nice, but gets worse mileage and they DID have fuel/FIRE problems.

VW has nice interiors..., but thats about it. The TDI does get great mileage but polutes more then a gas motor and as said, youll MOST LIKELY have issues with it. lol coilpacks, window regulators etc.

as for winter safety. WINTER TIRES(like most have said). Get a set.

so, corolla or civic..go test drive em and pick the one you like best. I prefer the civic(especially the new one).
