sex slavery is very real, even in countries like australia where the sex industry is miniscule compared to countries in Europe. Such examples would include a woman from Thailand that seeks a better life in a first world country like Australia, she will arrange to get herself smuggled into Australia, where the people smugglers will pay the plane tickets, forge the necessary documents and passports, teach them enough english to get through customs. Once she is in Australia she has to work off this debt (which from memory can be around 40K) which means she will be imprisoned in the brothel (i've forgotten how long, but it could be around a decade) all money going towards the smugglers. The crux is that these women enter into these arrangements fully aware of what will happen, aware that there is a very real chance of being the victim of domestic violence and rape, but the grass is always greener...

Yesterday in a news broadcast in Denmark, a reporter documenting his feat by a hidden camera, bought himself a sex slave in Romania. Price tag was about $2000, and he was free to take the girl with him.
Apparently the local organized crime units threaten the girls with severe consequences to their families if they don't accept their fate. I'd say that that borderlines "forcing a woman to be a prostitute", but I guess it all depends on how you feel about your family.

try and find a foreign film, i think it's russian, called "Lilya 4 Eva" it's about a young girl in the former soviet union who is forced into sex slavery in Sweden, extremely sad :( brilliant movie

Unless she's a farm animal I expect business isn't so good :p. Where is st_Andrew anyway?

I've seen Sex Slavery first hand in Cambodia, and Thailand; the women live as cattle, to serve the every whim of these rich balding, slightly obese, sixty year olds from first world countries who've flown down for a sex holidays.

I agree with legalising prostituion, the more the government can set up laws that allow prostituion but protect the rights of the workers the better. It's like the war on drugs, no matter how long this war will be waged it can never be won, Holland has the best approach.

But to answer your question, I don't know. We have heard of plenty of historical figures that were whorespawn (sorry, the word just had a ring to it). Of course, in the same breath, the average life expectancy was also much lower. Potentially mitigating factors?

One of the Popes in the renaissance was wrapped around the little finger of a prostitute. I think a few of his sons were from her, she had considerable power in the papacy aswell. The 'companions' (i think they were called that) back then got a lot more respect. sorry for being vague, my brain en suckls atm for some reason, too much alcohol on the weekend i think :p

Born Into Brothels is brilliant occy, it was on one of our free to air stations two weeks ago

I've never seen that movie.

Yeah I'd use the Nevada model where it is regulated and the women have to have regular exams and tests for STDs, and I think local or state communities should be able to vote on it.

Well, you should look into it. Trust me on this lol.

You know what's funny....I keep hearing "legal prostitution" and "men's needs" and "girls check ups" and all that BUT...wouldn't it be fair for WOMEN to be able to get prostitutes, too? O0o0o0o now you start thinking twice about it.

Not really. To do so would be blatantly hypocritical. In Denmark there's male prostitutes - and both women and men are catered to.

yeah I was talking about the movie monster, it is good enough reason for me to think that there must be a way out of the sex trade for people who get tired of working there. Prosititution is fine by me as long as people aren't getting abused. How many other industries would hire an ex-hooker? The problem is that prostitution can become a hole that people cannot climb out of once they are in it, and it is wrong to allow that to happen because it is tantamount to forced sex labor.

You've got a point.

I think the sex slave aspect of prostitution needs to be addressed, and it's quite reprehensible.

On the other hand, I don't have a problem if it's sex between two consenting adults in exchange for money.
