Over intellectualizing DJ sets is stupid. Yes, it's an art, but like someone said before, DJing is as much of an art as making a collage.
And if some DJ throws down a DJ Sammy song and it rocks the crowd, some TAs will call that DJ $hitty. Who ing cares. If the majority like what that DJ plays that's all that matters.
If a DJ's mixing is suspect, who cares? If it's still danceable, that's all that matters. No one will dance to horses gallopping.
Remember, DJs play for people who dance, not only those who like post-modern-minimalist-electronic-music.
It's DJing for Christsakes. I can totally understand why you'd complain about a hip hop turntablist, but you guys are going too deep into 4 on the floor music. |

You're making an argument of "Who cares?" when clearly, there are those of us who do in fact care.
Essentially you're making the claim that what a DJ plays, how he plays it, and and his abilities are irrelevant as long as he makes his audience dance. And while this may be sufficient for you, for those of us who do genuinely care about DJ'ing as an art that extends far beyond your simple "collage" analogy it simply does not. Your argument fails to make room for innovation, and essentially levels the playing field for DJ's equating the skills of guys like DJ Sammy and james Holden, which I think most people would agree is a fallacy. |

I couldn't give a toss whether the DJ is an awesome mixer or not, I go out to clubs to take a unwind, get pissed and have a good time, not to analyse what the DJ is doing or how he is mixing. As long as he is playing pumping music that I like - then that's good enough for me.
I'm not saying I don't appreciate a smooth transition between two tracks, it's just the actual music being played that is more important to me. |
