I just read this interesting interview with Sven Väth and I have to say I agree with him.

I also read an interview with Above & Beyond in Dj Mag where they basically blamed the bad name trance has today on people like DJ Sammy and other pop trance producers. Personally I don't agree, I think it's because trance hasn't changed at all in the last 10 years and, like the dinosaurs, you either evolve or you get the f**k of my planet. But I put my thoughts on my website.

so what, nothing wrong with pop music.
what made me curious about this interview though it what exactly does he mean by "neo-trance"? I've heard the term in passing but nobody has ever really explained the definition to me or even pointed out an example track and how it differs from regular trance. |

well considering sven vath was one of the original trance producers, maybe he's differenciating classic trance from today. |

Ha, I knew he'd go back to playing SOME Trance. Don't be surprised to see guys like Sasha & Digweed make similar claims in the next few years as well.
As hard as they tried to bash the genre, or move away from it, Trance is what got these DJs popular. When Trance gained a commercial audience some of these DJs felt they were losing their credibility, or they got tired of Trance b/c it was the only thing they were listening to and playing.
Now they see that Trance is still the biggest sound in EDM, and they see that a vetran of the scene like PVD is now the most popular DJ on the globe. That's why you now see more Techno (Smith & Selway) , House (Wally Lopez), and Breakbeat (Hyper) DJs/producers involved with things that are at least semi Trance.
Let's face it - a lot of the Tech House music these DJs latched onto was either too slow BPM-wise, or too much of a filler sound for them to stick with. As much as people claim that Trance is formulaic, Tech House is even moreso, and unlike Trance there's no hook/melody for ppl to remember any particular tune.
People are also fed up with 80s looped or Disco looped House music.
So as you can see Tech House and certain types of House are much more fads then Trance, which has managed to stick around and grow even while many in the media try to kick it hard in its balls.
Notice how DJ Mag featured an interview with Above & Beyond in February, and now in March with Oakie? This magazine used to shy away from Trance as much as possible, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
We have great guys like Mike Foyle, Ditial Blonde, Infected Mushroom, Andy Moor, Airbase, and others producing different types of quality Trance.
The Febroary issue of DJ Mag, where they have the interview with Above & Beyond, seems to be pushing the new sound of Breaks very hard. It looks like that's gonna be the next big sound as it has a very "Rocking" element, with crazy, distorted hooks (taken from Chicago's Hard house scene), that crossover Chemical Brothers/Prodigy Big Beat element, and more vocal samples. It's also not always full-on Breakbeat, as it cleverly zig zags between Breaks and a more 4-to the floor sound. Great stuff in general :)
One only has to listen to the free Breakbeat CD that came with that DJ Mag in Feb to see what I'm talking about.
PS Above & Beyond nailed it when they mentioned that a lot of the vocal pop Trance comes from countries where English isn't the primary language. That's why the lyrics are very cheesy and basic. |

I listened regularly for quite some time to a Sven Vath set from last October, and it did sound at least influenced by trance to me. Really good set overall.
Can't say I have been following closely his career, but massive respect to this guy. |

i gotta disagree with a lot of what you said.
i don't think dj's like sasha and digweed got popular playing trance, true they used to incorporate some progressive trance into their sets, but it's pretty different from the trance that say tiesto, pvd, above & beyond etc have always played. they got famous doing what they still do...playing music with fantastic basslines and grooving beats.
as for tech house being formulaic and boring, i'd have to disagree again. i don't know how much you actually know about the genre, but one of the beauties of it is the huge assortment of variation in sound. and as for artists like smith & selway, wally lopez, etc incorporating more trancey elements into their work...i disagree. if anything the opposite is true. what we've seen over the last couple of years is trance attempting to become more like the other genres. in fact, most of the top trance dj's have started to play more of these other genres in the last year or so because they see how popular and effective it is.
there are hooks and memeroable tracks that are tech house or techno or whatever...but instead of mostly relying on melody, they rely on basslines...which despite your opinion of them are infectious on the dancefloor. |

ok i can agree that is a pretty trancey song from a typically tech-ish group, i hadn't heard it, but that doesn't mean that tech house (or smith & selway) in general are moving in that direction. Smith & Selway also just released Work It not too long ago and that isn't trancey at all...
edit: hell they probably made it for the beaches this summer. |
