sasha really doesn't utilize ableton to its fullest capabilities (even with the maven), nor does he do anything "wow" or special with it.
*edit*
only person thats wow'ed me with ableton so far is BT. |

the only time i've seen "prog" used for anything but progressive house has been here on ta. progressive trance has always been "trance" and record stores have always mislabeled genres imo. satellite records had a section labeled "progressive" and it was ALL progressive house. progressive breaks went under "breaks" and progressive trance was under "trance". There was no confusion |
dude, what are you talking about?!
alright anyway, so what do u call songs like:
chable & bonnicci - ride
holden - break in the clouds
central rush - out of focus
for example??? they're not house, they're not trance, they're Just Progressive. |

i don't see any reason to call danceable music just "progressive" simply for the reason that it's a little different from obvious existing formulas (like a holden track or something). he makes music that is both minimal and tech-infused and overall progressive and housey as well and since he's a mathematical genius, i think he has formulas too, i just don't know them :D
though there is music i'd call i'd call progressive trance only to describe the way that it's interepreted by my brain relative to other progressive house, there is arguably no such genre as progessive trance! those two words are just descriptive and they are so vague that they could be describing the hottest sasha or digweed fave vinyl from june 1999. or how about markus shulz? and how about something that is pretty much just trance, like "as the rush comes" or purple haze - adrenaline? all of them can be called progressive trance.... why? these are just different ways of using the two words to describe completely different things. i think this proves that there is no one genre called progressive trance and the usage of these words to describe music in general and particularly good music should be avoided.
as far as i'm concerned progressive house is the only needed term with the word progressive or 'prog' meaning this for edm discussion purposes.... most stuff that needs to be differentiated from 'prog' or 'progressive house' is the twinkleprog that we don't even need to talk about. |

oh... and i know a ton of you don't care for sasha or don't care for sasha post 2001 or 2002 or 2003 if ever...
but as groundhog and dubz have said, this in no way means that sasha sets lack energy. he plays quite a lot of energetic stuff and he gets his bpm ups high too for the kind of house he is playing.
i also notice that a bunch of you don't like sasha and claim to like digweed, some with convincing music listening experience and knowledge and others who seem relatively noobish as well. i can see that...it's a matter of taste, they both have their distinctions that make them what they are individually and your taste is likely to lean over to one side of the equation a little more than the other. i think this has a lot to do with where the tension tends to sit in their music, and digweed's tends to be groove based while sasha's is like mindbending and i can't even put into words. however this has nothing to do with dark or light music, nor does it have to do with energy or bpms. both are capable of the same speeds, the same intensity, the same levels of "evilness" or the same level of dirty or feel-good music.
what im trying to say is if you think sasha sucks just because he lacks energy then that's not an opinion based on fact. i realize that perception counts but there will be more than enough of us who are willing to go on and on talking about "energetic sasha".
also just because sasha does not use decks like he did for over a decade (blowing everyone away) does not mean anything has been lost by him. i hate this type of thinking and i know it's far from true from my own experience. just because he does not use ableton to full potential does not mean he's not getting better with it over time and that he will really be able to push himself as a dj. it also does not mean that he can't pull off a mix that only uses the same possibilities as decks and can sound like classic sasha. who the cares what he's not doing yet? we know what he can do and he's doing a little bit more.
i've seen sasha a bunch last year and this one.... i know he still uses cds. he uses them when goes wrong. he also uses them for no reason now and then and his music is all backed up on disc. no one gives a damn about how animated he is but i've seen him jump and clap plenty too. he was as animated as it gets the last time i saw him after three music stoppages. ableton does not prevent anything, it increases the limits of a genius on decks semi-infinitely. just wait and see what happens.
same thing in a different context for is true for pvd too.... stop complaining! it's just a matter of them getting THAT in-touch with their new formats. |
