my first car, a '91 Buick LeSabre, was the most reliable automobile i've ever owned.

this was posted in Demoted's car thread last week but i think it belongs here too...

and of course cars that are more affordable are going to have more reports of problems...becuase more people own them.

im proud to say ive never had any majour probs with my honda, only thing that annoys me is the SRS light came on, but that's not really a driveability problem. i never worry about my car starting up when i get into it in the morning.

when you put ~100 miles per day on your car, you need something thats reliable.

WRONG, the JD power rankings are based on a measurement matrix called TGW or things gone wrong. this is not based on warranty data, instead it is based on consumer surveys. Statistically large full sized sedans are the biggest TGW hitters as the older clients tend to be more picky. the JD power dependability rankings dont really cover long term powertrain trends in vechicles as most the surveys are usually sent out at three months in service. most major car repairs will happen after the 100 000 km mark.

the north american automakers actually have very dependable vehicle lines. crown victoria, grand marquis, lincoln town car etc routinely end up in multi service fleet lines (cop car -> cab etc) many of these cars pass the 300 000 KM mark quite easily with very few major repairs.

The TGW matrix includes alot of minor cosmetic complaints like paint scratches, fit and finish of trim components, and accessory functionality. the only reason we track this matrix at work is to keep our JD power ranking high.

huh? if you look at the top 10, only 4 of them are American.

the whole American vs import debate is kind of pointless though, because not EVERY American car manufacturer is crap, just like not every import car manufacturer is amazingly reliable... if you look at that graph, you'll see that the American vs imports are spread out pretty evenly.

the surveys are sent out by the manufacturers, every customer gets one, the older clients tend to be the ones that fill them out in my experience anyways...... those 65 yr old retirees can be a bastard on those surveys...... they write up everything.

i try not to get into the import vs domestic battle.... but being a ford employee does skew my opinion....:P

ah you're diggin the G20 i see, nice little ride

The amount of people discussing concepts they clearly don't have a strong grasp on in this thread is absolutely staggering.

Myra is right, the import vs. domestic debate is pointless; There is no clear cut answer that will work across the board.

However, I will say this, the arguments being put forth by Mr. Crisp in favor of domestics over imports is without doubt on some levels inaccurate and displays a clear bias; The clear lack of objectivity alone negates any real conclusions you could make based on the very specific, single scenario situations being put forth.
