me. i wish i was into it though, but i'm not gonna all of a sudden take a huge interest in the WC just because everyone else is.
i have never been a big sports fan at all except for like the superbowl of course or something major. hockey is the only sport i actually enjoy watching (not on tv all the time, but going to the games).
i'm really into basketball right now actually and i never used to like it. i think ever since the heat have been doing so well and since i met hamilton from the pistons during the eastern conference, i got all into it for some reason. all the hype got me in the mood. now i'm totally into watching the games, from start to finish and i actually know the players now and can contribute to a convo about basketball. i never used to be that type, it's funny.
baby steps for me. i think trying to take on soccer now would be too much. lol i'm just gonna stay in my bball mode. |

The reason behind the popularity of world cup isn't football alone. It's a duel of nations: a bunch of players from the same nation representing their land. This is far from happening (thankfully) in national leagues, where you have people from different cities, different countries and whatnot playing in the same squad. And, they're all playing the same sport - it's not like the olympics where you have several different olympic events happening at the same time. During the olympics, it's almost an individual effort, as you can have athletes from the same country competing against each other (e.g. swimming).
In fact, I don't even like football - I'd hate to spend one hour and a half watching guys kicking a ball. My interest on the world cup is the passion that there is over something that doesn't really exists: the concept of a country.
The fever, the passion, that irrational - but strong - feeling that stops entire cities, where almost all citizens draw their attention to a small court with 22 players. |

ah man one of my favorite things ever is when people start to bash the world cup or soccer in general, and then i find out they like to watch baseball
