I think the real first rule is keep the beer away from the Tables, and mixer. I've seen a vestax taken out by a Corona, and a 1200's pitch killed with a Miller Light. The 1200 lived on after a new pitch, but the vestax was never the same.

| see when i was younger id go to clubs that would play the top 40 and crap like that and go up to the dj's with EDM cd's lol...kinda the opposite but the same annoyance i suppose...ive learned better though ;) |

No. If I'm taking time out of my schedule and haulng all my equipment over to play at your party, I am playing my ing music, and if you have a problem, hire a ing hip hop DJ. I'm not the guy who was at your graduation playing top 40.
Definatley not gonna make my ears bleed for free, on my equipment.

you can stop playing houseparties where people go to expecting hip hop. just because your friend thinks it's cool that you're a DJ and likes your music doesn't automatically mean that all of his friends will.
i by default deny all requests to spin at any houseparties my day-friends, like from class and whatnot (as opposed to my real friends, the ones i go out with n ) throw. theres people don't know what it's all about, even if they think it's "cool" and might even like your music, they don't know what it's like for you to carefully select records, and craft your set, and have to haul all your precious, sensistive, and hard-earned gear, get there early, set up the sound, leave late, have to pick everything up, and not even get paid. not to mention, it sort of defeats the purpose of the house party, when you can't have any fun because you're the one spinning (this is why at EDM houseparties, me and my friends take turns, at least 3 DJs).
possible solutions for general houseparties:
a) tell the host what's up. he might re-consider, or warn his guests. still, this may suck, because if everyone agrees to it and then don't like it, well, it sucks.
b) play a short set. recently, for a friend's bday, he asked me to please spin. which i refused to and explained why. he then said, fine, to spin for at least one hour, and he'd take care of the rest of the time. it ended up being a huge event, complete with 2 local rock bands, one of which is somewhat well known. (i was the 'dance section' part. i thought fine, and got there at midnight cuz i had to go to a friend's wedding first, thinking the party would be nearing peakonly to be surprised that it was near over and in about 20 minutes about 75% of the poeple had left. wtf. ty partiers). it would have worked out well though, had i known they were going to bed early.
either way man, even if you're spinning for free, there is completely no point to it if the people aren't liking it. i mean, if you are aware of this, what's the point of spinning at all? you're spinning for them. if you want to spin for yourself, you can do this at home. this is why i don't normally spin for those people, both them and myself would have a lot more fun if i didn't, they could listen to hip hop, and i can get drunk for free and no work included, and possibly hookup.
my 2 cents.
ps: try hosting your own parties. or co-hosting them. this can be a lot cooler than a clubnight as already mentioned. you get about 30 good friends who love the music, a nice basement, 2 or 3 decent monitor speakers and some of your DJ friends. add a lot of booze, and you have an excellent night. |

In my experiences as a dj, I have learned that house parties are a waste of time. First of all, drunk people are annoying as ever and think they are cool by going up to the dj booth and all. Then there are shady people who look like they are going to steal something (I had one guy look through my records and he was wearing a glove and carried a flash light...wtf who carries a flashlight). The worst part is i am deaf after the party too. Bottom line, the only good thing about doing house parties is the feeling you get when everybody is enjoying themselves and goes crazy when they hear a good song. Also you learn to crowd read (however drunk people tend to be more likely to dance to anything so its debatable on how much you learn).
BTW never ever take requests. The only person that enjoys what was requested was the person who requested it. People seem to request these old songs that are so awful that I didn't even think was listened to anymore. |

No no dude, if I was spinning for nobody I wouldnt even bother. Most of the people at these parties ARE down for house/electro etc its just the few wannabe gangsters in the corner who cant dance to anything above 90bpm because their pants will fall down. :mad: |

i think you guys are getting the rough end of the deal.
i spin at alot of house parties, get paid VERY well for them, and play normally mostly house music all night!!
i generally play like 20 minutes of just current rnb, usually dont even bother mixing, just fade in and out to get people in the mood cause no one is at the party for the first 30 minutes or so anyway. Then i just play house music all night! i have been at gigs where the host has says "just play house music". Sure you get alot of wankers who think they know everything about music and DJing in general but you just pretend not to hear them or just cue up a track in your headphones and eventually they go away. As long as u sort of block yourself off a bit it doesnt seem to be too bad.
It's pretty easy money when you think about it really. Me and a mate do it together, charge a packet, and generally have a good time doing it.
There is always a few dicks who have to spoil it for the rest of the crowd but you learn to ddeal with them |

meh, i get it.
but what are these people doing there anyways? i mean, i once actually had a busload of people from a Daddy Yankee concert (regggaeton, crappy hispanic hip hop basically) crash one of my parties. it was clear this was an EDM ONLY thing, this was my ing house, and anyone who didn't like it could leave. many many many thought this was actually cool, and those who didn't, well , they were smart, cuz if any of them had the balls to tell me what to play in MY HOUSE, was gonna hit the fan.
luckily, they were cool people with a lot of hot chicks. |

| Usually me and my friends never have problems with music thats being played at the house parties, though I get really bored after 2 hours listening to techno. Most of us are EDM addicts, the rest will just get used. |

my first house pary was a blast! went off playing trance, but its always a good learning curve to know you can vary it a little. that party one of my vinyls got wrecked because a friend came over and put the weight of his arm on my vinyl and stylus/cart. Stylus and cart were still ok GT ORTOFON (good and tough)
the guy paid for my record though.
i will only do close friends parties because if something goes wrong i can deal with the f#$%ers, also thats why they have mobile djs who dont play for themselves and only virtual only know how to say ... "that will be $400 thankyou bye!"
my dream house parties would be just to be djing in front of well known mates of mine and drinking and have a good time! |
