i have had monitors set up for a couple of my house parties, however i never noticed a difference in how the mixing turned out; coming to the conclusion that its pointless. It seems monitors that more are better suited for bigger venues with bad acoustics, unlike homes.

You Play outwork and mr gee - electro

building the night is the best part...i like to start out with some underground hip hop and reggae then work it into some dubby downtempo then eventually up to house. makes it so much better when you do finally drop that beat :o

Yes you only really need monitors when the space is large enough to have a delay or an improper setup that causes delay (speakers too far apart).

I always let them know that I dont have a lot of hip hop tracks to spin in the first place. Usually if someone is askin for a Dj to play a house party thats what they want to hear(hip hop), unless its people that I know like edm. I'm not going to Dj somewhere that my music isn't appreciated, so theres no point in me bringing my equipment if they want to hear hip hop.

I think If i was to play another house party I would just play it ALL. WOuld be much more fun. Start with some lounge, bring it into some deep house, kill the peak hour with some solid hip hop and house, maybe a class rock tune or something and close it with some harder stuff, maybe some trance or techno.

Yeah that is for the total noob crowd and people that come up to you asking "can you play something less gay"...man this thread feels my pain for two weeks ago :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha:....next party we play should be one where its all house heads from boston only so there's no jerks bothering people when ur mixing and most importantly you dont have to dumb down the music :)

what i do is take about three or four friends with me and i ask them to hang around by the equipment and i tell them that if they see anyone close to go themselves and ask what that person wants. i dont really like to personally talk to the crowd. if i see that its boring then ill consider changing it up

That's weird, my whole enjoyment from this dj'ing thing comes from being able to have a waffle with people here and there. Obviously it gets annoying when they ask for hip hop and what not, but then half the other times they'll just want to have a chit chat about either your equipment or the tunes you've been playing/they would love to hear.

I'd never have mates 'bodyguarding' me though. Takes away from the fun IMO of course. I can see the benefits though from a 'protecting your gear' point of view :)

ya i see how sometimes its great to communicate with the crowd. you have a point there, just as long as they dont tell me what to put on.
