Rule #1 for house parties (pg. 7)

yea...I was at a party a few weeks ago, this dj was spinning some rippin' dark techno, and some guy came up to me and was like .. this dude should play some house, don't you think? And I was like, I like what he's playing. He said 'oh, well I'm gonna go tell him to play some house'. Not all people who like EDM understand the whole 'respect to the dj' thing.

even though this thread is back from the dead, it never fails to remind me not to play house parties ... because all you're gonna get is requests for hiphop and rap. When most people think DJ'ing, they think scratching some rap record and playing the top of the pops :sadgreen: :sadgreen: :sadgreen:

Like people have been saying. Unless you know the people are going to want to hear what you play you better just consider it work.

Same sort of thing happened to me though this time it were the trance (and harder styles) heads that were annoying me :D The guy before me played trance and was spinning at 140 bpm when the evening had only just begun. So when it was my turn the bpm dropped to around 128 bpm, because I mostly play house, progressive and some minimal sounding stuff. Ofcourse I can pitch it up to +10, but I don't want to be responsible for some chipmunk music.

I don't understand these people telling me my music sounds so "loungy" :wtf: Place the local Armin van Buuren's and Marco V's behind me then!

I've done a couple parties in dorms where the crowd basically equates a 4/4 beat with "techno crap".

Start out with some hip-hop/reggaeton... slide into a few EDM pop remixes (thank you Max Graham and Deep Dish, for Owner of a Lonely Heart and Dreams, respectively)... then mix into more and more legit house as the night goes on. By the time they realize what's happened, the BPM's up to 138 and you've got Way Out West cued up.

Theres something about house parties that I just cant seem to get right. Maybe its a usual thing though, at times the floor will just clear and turn into a dead zone. I envy being able to play DnB at house parties, though me and a mate have succeeded with two pendulum tracks which actually went off, I was surprised. Requests do me, I think Ill have to work on progression though which could be the problem with house parties I do. Since I (until recently) worked exclusively on vinyl, and since Im lacking in the money department, the collection becomes limited and I can only buy thrillers.
Some of the people talking about starting up with real down-tempo stuff as the party gets goin give me some good ideas and defnitely sounds like something Id try.

I tend to get very nervous when people start putting their cups/glasses/bottles on the table where Im set up and espescially when they stumble over to you and put it down then stare at it for a sec as drunk people tend to do.

I don't remember if I've said this before but the #1 rule for house parties is just don't do them. Unless it is your own house or a party with a bunch of house/techno/trance heads then maybe you should do it but for the most part say the away. Save yourself for clubs/bars/lounges/outdoor events.

Why?

Because they suck haven't you even read the thread? The vast majority of those at a house party expect for you to play hip-hop besides that having people touch/spill beer on my equipment is enough for me not to want to do it.
