Ask any house fan (former trance fans) and they will tell u different.

i don't need the opinion of a house fan to justify trance being better nowadays. just listen to the production quality. the type of sounds, use of stereo fields, positioning of parts, everything about it is better nowadays than it used to be. as i stated before, more unique, not quite. but the quality is 10x better. there's not possibly way u can justify trance being worse than it was before.

quality trance has always been supremenergy and beauty...

the ratio of good tracks & bad is a lot worse then it used to be. Labels sign way to much crap (quantity over quality). Now when I even look at juno & chemical there are soo many bad tracks on them, not even talking about Beatport/audio jelly. 99% of the tracks on them are garbage. If tracks arn't good enough to get pressed the chances are that its just formulatic crap.

Back a few years ago i would like every few tracks, now its maybe a track a month or so...

"production" may be better today, I know I could listen to for example pvd Tool/tos/stormy skies.

the production is amazing, some of the best production work out there. But the tracks are horrid :stongue:

Only trance track that interested me this year was Sean Tyas-Lift. Some of the stuff John Askew played wasnt so bad either.

i can partially agree with that because as i stated earlier, tracks aren't necessarily more unique. but i disagree with you in saying there's more crap nowadays.

there's always been a lot of crap thats been released. there always has been and there always will be. i guess its true there are a lot more labels now because of the whole digital revolution, but it really opens a lot of doors for people and many times i am surprised at the good quality of tracks that i hear. its expected to have good tracks and bad tracks. i dont' feel like thats ever changed.

you guys are also mostly basing the quality of tracks on the fact that your tastes have changed and you don't like hearing the trance sound anymore. i was debating this in another thread elsewhere how people are saying formulaic this formulaic that. what some people are failing to realize is that writing good music doesn't necessarily entail creating a new sound. now think about that carefully. of course everyone wants to be original. have their own niche, their own sound. but think about how difficult it is to do something like that. and even when you do (someone like andy moor) you still got tons of people ragging on you for it. anyways my point is, writing music is more than just having your unique style. so much of it has to do with actually sitting down and writing that damn melody. there are tons of tracks that people just overlook or will immediately pass over because it has similar synths, percussion, or pads as another track. i personally look much deeper than that and see if they are actually writing good melodies. how these melodies blend with one another. how they blend with the sound effects.

if you are tired with the sound of trance, of course its gonna sound boring to you. you've moved onto to other things. but i still haven't seen any facts given of how trance tracks "nowadays" are so much crappier.

p.s.

i didn't seriously start appreciating productions until i started doing it myself. once i realized the level of quality these guys are pulling off and how difficult it is to produce well, it really gave me a different angle on looking at tracks.

great point hai lee itakes a great deal of musical perception sensing the intricacies and movements trance melodies provide i simply love it. it iso most amusing how unqualified persons by the simple act of stating their opinions confirm how unfamiliar they are with a subjecthey hardly comprehend clearly demonstrating a typical heard mentality not just in their political views but even their tastes conditioned by group preferences. when trance is played proper with fancy and aplomb it is indeed the most sophisticated and captivating electronic genre since it is the one which closest resembles classical music via its wonderful build ups and capturing emotional melodies. for trancenthusiasts and dj’s alike the most appealing component is being able to articulate seamlessly two melodies without compromising overall integrity of the set and current momentum/energy… a difficultask by any standards. great tracks areasy to spothey are obvious they have an edge to them from beginning to end; thus, it is irrelevant how many are being produced since mosthings in general aren’t great in principle. lastly i must say for any dj who claims to play trance there is indeed a surpluss of magical tracks to play continuously for days andays without a minute of virtual stagnation. the repertoire of magical tracks is there and is vast; however the deficit lies in the number of artists with imagination and energy

stick with the aphorisms homey...

Trance now-a-days might be cleaner in sound, but its incredibly bland than what it used to be.

And anyway, who cares if its 'clean'? The best music ever produced was rough around the edges and had a certain dirtiness about it.

And to take this point to another level, why dont you compare the number of house tracks that trance DJs played in 2000, 01, 02, 03... compared to these past 2 years.

thats a good point on how trance dj's are playing much wider variety of stuff now, but i feel like so many productions now have so much cross-genre sounds... that its only natural for that to happen. thats one reason why i feel like trance isn't bland nowadays because of all these cross-genre productions. i can hear trancy elements in a much wider variety of tracks.

i guess i for one, never really heard live sets which were made up entirely of just all trance. so i guess i never experienced a pure trance night which was interesting the whole way through because i personally do find sets which only contain uplifting trance to be boring. one example was sean tyas at crash mansion. that night was generally pretty fun, but after the 8th straight track w/ the same kick/bassline and synths, i was wanting to hear something different.
