I did, but I also study economics at school... it's fun, and it explains why tips are necessary!

What some people fail to realize is that a servers hourly wages are most of the time around $2/hour. (in the US). As long as the employer can prove that we are making over minimum wage per hour with tips included, it perfectly legal. (we have to claim our tips for tax purposes at the end of every evening). Thus, if people dont tip us, we dont eat or pay rent.

However, it perfectly acceptable to tip based on the service. To open a bottle of beer warrants a MUCH smaller tip than, say, a waitress doing a full meal, which is actually a lot more work than one might think. The general rule (in the US, since canadians OBVIOUSLY do not follow this) is %18:

18% of a $3 beer is going to be a very small tip, but for a $100 meal or several mixed drinks, which require the effort, will be expectedly more.

DONT be cheap!! If beer costs $3.75 the least you could do is give him the freakin quarter!! :whip:

It's all been discussed at length HERE. Bump the thread if you want to, but that discussion is closed. I forgot what was the actual reason we discovered that people in NA are accustomed to tipping, but I remember it was pretty ing stupid. Check the end of the thread - I summarized it there.

my intent in this thread wasnt to discuss bout tipping or not to tip

but was to show my overall experience. by reading my inital post, you can see that this was only a part of my night.

I am in grad school getting my masters, and its a good side job....people tip VERY well in NYC, something I see that doesn't happen as often in Canada.

I hate when servers or bartenders act like YOU OWE THEM A TIP. NO I dont owe you a tip, I can choose to give u if i find your SERVICE better then mediocre.

Of course if u are in a nice restoraunt and u got a meal, then yea u should tip. but at the bar? haha that

Exactly, youre not owed to tip, just as youre not owed a drink til I feel ready to serve you your next one. haha...******s.

I think the problem thats lies at nightclubs (which is why I would never work at a nightclub as a bartender) is that you arent really a bartender...you make vodka/cranberries or pop beer caps all night long, which any trained monkey could do. But its about speed, looking good and no brains and thats what gets tips (how fast are you?). Since management pays every worker so ty, even if you were given atleast 50 cents for every drink you put out, you could cash out a good 100 dollars cash a night (which isnt that good but after tipping out barbacks/bussers/cooks, but I guess you cant really complain about 100 bucks cash for 7 hours of work+ 6.85 an hour, its decent money). If I could give anyone real advice, stay away from nightclubs for employment, its sucks ass, I dont even like barbacking, but the money is good at my place and as an extra job income, ill do it without the hassle of being a prick behind a bar to people who are s to me. Ill never waiter or bartend again.

Now unlike working a real restaurant, (martini lounge, nice hotel bar) where people order real drinks everyday, I think a bartender should get paid for his services. Making and creating fun and exciting drinks, martini's or layered shots actually involves service (some skill and memory). Which is where tipping should be a dollar or more depending on how good the bartender is and how charming he/she might be while doing their job.

They probably get paid more then minimum wage and have a decent hourly wage to compensate.

I dont think anyone can survive minimum wage pay @ 40 hours a week.

I don't feel like getting into the same arguments all over again. See that thread.
