It's understandable, and I know what it's like to have family going through tough medical/phsychological times. Im glad to hear your father improved some though. And that you don't feel depressed anymore.

You gotta keep your head on straight.. don't go changing the way you are to find a girl (ie. drinking so you dont feel nervous to approach them). That's not the solution, contrary to what people are suggesting here.. There are girls who do actually appreciate nice honest guys who would treat them well and give them respect, and dont need to hide behind a wall of false-confidence created by alcohol.

And also I know what you're talking about in your state of just being "blah". it's only natural to go through times of being really happy, depressed, blah. Don't worry about it, the days when you feel inspired, happy, worth living, they're never far away, and come at unexpected times.

Yeah my family has gone through both. Thanks.

I have tried to keep my head on straight and I guess be perfect. I guess having a very imperfect sister has made me want to be perfect in my parents eyes. I guess since she's so screwed up, they would want a son who goes to school, gets a degree, gets a good job and gets into a stable marriage. I know I'm not perfect, but I try to be perfect in almost everything I do. I guess I've said i'm the Ashley Judd, to the Wynona Judd...if you've heard about their story. But I guess I really haven't had too many serious issues with me, other than the fact that it's been so hard to maintain friendships over the years as well as find a girl.

My parents have actually encouraged me to go out and do stupid stuff and not display this clean cut image, yet they don't let me go to clubs in Detroit. I dunno if they are being serious with this, but they just think I'm too stuck in being too good, and not wild like my sister is or used to be at least. Yet they are happy that I am this way...and tell me this often. Which makes me feel good, but it's like a toss up between me going out and having a fun time partying and drinking, and me being this really good student who reads, writes and listens to music and works hard. So sometimes I don't know who I am, but I gravitate towards the latter because I am so determined to do well in school and in life and am fine with my clean cutness.

Yeah I go in and out of blah. Somedays I feel really energized and want to go out and do something. And somedays at work I feel really good. Other times, I just feel like I don't care and go into my own little world. But once school starts, I get busy and meet people and things are better. It's just the summer time...which after a while seems so long and dull and I feel this way...

Oh and I wouldn't agree with trying to act distant or less 'nice' to find a girl and make her like you..

Maybe my advice is worthless since I didn't have much girl experience to start with.. but I would say if you're looking to actually establish a relationship that means something, not a one night stand or something just based on physical attraction, you might want to consider being exactly how you are. Be nice, show them that you care about them, show them that you are romantic or sweet. Not necessarily all at once or you may overwhelm them or scare them, but you know what Im saying.

There is the popular attitude that acting aloof increases attraction for women, but.. I don't think meaningful relationships are well established on that, and It sounds to me like you are after a meaninful relationship and not just sex.

And this is exactly what I am looking for. The last girl I met...all she wanted was sex. I just wanted someone who accepted me for who I was and I could spend time with.

try this at a party:

"hi"
"hi"
"whats up?"
"not much"
"what are you doing later?"
"nothing"
"want to go home with me?"
"and do what?"
"you know ;)"

Haha well yeah, if you can get a ballance of doing things that are alittle more wild, spontaneous, whatever, and being responsible and clean cut. That's the key. And it's not impossible to achieve that ballance, maybe alittle tricky so that you don't slip too heavily to one side- but not impossible.

And believe me, I know a fair number of people who are very successful in the business/family/financial world and still know how to party and go crazy when appropriate. :toothless

Yeah I just have to find the right people to party with...striking a balance is definitely important.
