Why do the heads controlling the media in the USA refuse to promote electronic music (pg. 2)

Well back on subject:
I had a radio show for the longest down in, South Texas. Played a mixture of House, Trance and Progressive EDM. Was 4 hours every sat night and was very popular. However, the reason why they, mainstream media, does not promote EDM is the simple fact: MONEY.... There is Money to be made from all the Pop Crap and Hip Pop and other e that passes as music on MTV. I had that show for over 4 years, and ended leaving it once the program director asked me to start playing more commercial friendly tracks. Like Remixes of Pink or Britney Spears. and why??? Cause even though the show was popular, and won the time bracket in the ratings market (which was included in the 4th largest market in the US), advertisers did not want to buy time during music that was not mainstream... :whip: Money Talks and EDM walks.
Sad but true. I hate the fact that mainstream media only expose America to EDM is the latest commercial from a car company or when a sitcom on TV shows only Gay People listening to EDM. :rolleyes:
also it did not help the fact that I was doing a mix show in the frigging heart of Texas ha ha

Americans for the most part eat up pretty much anything presented in the mainstream and record labels promote the stuff here that is easy for them to create a property for. Britney Spears, U2, Maddonna, The Killers, Nickleback (ugh :() are all brand names that can easily be marketed and build a valuable IP for. When you have, with most EDM, tons of differen't producers (many with multiple aliases), American record labels are stupified on how to market it and you have yourself an incredibly wasted music industry. :( It's pretty sad. It's also part of the American Culture to idolize said brandnames and pretty much avoid the thought of music quality and originality. EDM is so great because for the most part it avoids all the idolization because of this "marketing dillema" and most EDM fans simply enjoy the music for the music. Not for the "lifestyle" or fashion said music employs.
America disgusts me in so many ways. |

Find that video interview of Derrick May from Exit festival saying that they had such a hard time trying to find a ing sponsor for movement.

I'll agree with what others have stated: 1.) money and 2.) lack of identities to market due to producers vs. DJs vs. too many aliases.
As an American, I can tell you this much: if EDM were to become mainstream here, we'd probably find a way to it up somehow. I kind of enjoy the fact that someone can walk into my office while I'm blarring Smith & Pledger - White and give me this look that just screams, "What the are you listening to?" Or when the UPS guys drops off some vinyl for me and everyone trips out, "zomgwtfbbq he's got real records!?!!eleven". |

Honestly I think mainstream radio is dead. I hate to say that because radio is such an important medium for expression & information exchange. It is inexpensive and could be democratic, but everyday people aren't in charge.
Radio won't support the true diversity of EDM, just like it doesn't support the diversity of a genre like jazz or classical. In the US, public & university radio are the only places to hear non-mainstream music, but they have only so many resources to do it.
I'm pretty sure the US elite will never be interested in a global music culture. Not only because it is unprofitable, but because the US tends to be full of itself. USA #1...and all that crap. In the US, global music seems to be the latest pop band from the UK. I feel embarrassed to be a US citizen because what is on the radio is pretty ty.
I think it is important for US EDM enthusiasts to fight the US monoculture because it will destroy all of EDM. As the wealth of the media gets more concentrated in the hands of a few, the powerful will try to squash its competition. Its competition is good EDM music produced globally.
We can complain about how bad the radio is or do something about it. I know of some ways to fight the power & make sure EDM keeps getting aired
1) Support internet radio. Listen, give feedback, and contribute money.
2) Start your own internet or pirate radio station.
3) Check out Low Power FM radio (entirely legal) Check out www.prometheusradio.org for more details. LPFM promotes local culture by building very, very local radio stations (2-10 mile radio radius) that broadcast a wide variety of stuff. LPFM activism came out of the radio pirate movement. Very cool stuff.
4) Give to or get involved in media activism. In the US, there are several groups fighting media conglomerates and the destruction of the media. In Philadelphia, PA (USA) we have Media Tank, which is an awesome group. They do a lot of different stuff, including the creation of alternative media.
I hope you don't consider what I wrote a political rant. This isn't about fancy words and political slogans, it is about saving my soul. Without music, my life wouldn't be worth living.

MTV still plays music? I can't remember the last time I've seen a video on MTV. Spoiled rich 16 year old birthday parties is a different matter however. |
