It's almost like there's this outer shell of hollow, dead, popular stuff where all the big names reinvent their discographies in ever more tedious fashion, and below it there's another trance altogether that's quietly getting on with the job.

Actually, that description reminds me of something: a book or a film, but I can't remember what.
