Just got into harmonic mixing. :)
Ran my first set last weekend and decided to go ahead and figure out the keys of all of my vocal and progressive trance tracks based on how nicely it all flows if you actually apply the concept. I figured it would be neat to ask this since this is being mainly a Trance Forum.
How many of you do harmonic mixing and what are your views on it? |

IMO, there's no other way to mix.
And there are plenty of threads on this here. |

A lot of DJ's don't mix harmonically (Ferry Corsten, Tiësto, ...)
It flows indeed very nice, but it cuts you back from picking any track you want at that time.
It's a choice you'd have to make for yourself; but the effort pays off eventually when you do :) |

I didn't mean it was the only option, I just meant that it's the primary way in which I choose to mix.
And yes, you make a good point in that you have to know when to mix what - Which may not always mean proper harmonic mixing. :) |

or if you're tonedeaf like me, it doesn't matter what tunes come in, i can't tell the difference. I can hear different levels etc, but i can't actually tell you what each thing is & so on. Clashes are fun :p |

You are disgustingly missinformed :nervous:
I mix harmonically as a hobby and i love it.. best way to program a set whether you mix house, trance, prog whatever.. imo it seperates the good dj's from the bad. |

Just yesterday actually I was messing around with that rapid evolution 2 program. I scanned a whole folder of mp3s and sorted them by key, then burned two cds full of same key tracks. It was really fun locking in master tempo and playin around mixing between stuff. Pretty amazing effect when you can literally overlay two tracks for minutes at a time and have them just blend together.
I recommend this to anyone who hasn't tried it; it's fun stuff. |

i mix harmonically 100% of the time. though it does limit your track selection, i find it a useful guide to narrow down what i play next. there are so mnay different harmonic mixes you can do, i dont see it as too much of a problem in terms of limitation. been doing it for so long i wouldnt know how to mix any other way.

I started off not mixing harmonically and it was fine.
I do some harmonic mixes, but I've found it's limited track selection, and my library isn't diverse enough to accommodate for that quite yet.
The first time I did a harmonic mix it was so much fun.
I think I check the keys to make sure they don't clash obscenely (had a problem w/ mixing Oceanlab - Satellite into just about everything), but then again, I tend to mix out really late.
I'd say I mix harmonically about 40-50% of the time. It's certainly a good technique, and I'd like to be able to determine keys by ear and such. |

One way of doing things?
Who are you favorite dj's/producers? do you think they ever miss a key in their sets?
Nothing worse than droping energy on the dance floor with a sour mix :) |
