The music business is very diverse and in some ways, a bit skeptic.
The booking industry works on different levels. It depends on the agency and the talent. When booking a dj (e.g - james Zabiela, Paul Woolford), the agency will take in consideration the promoter's ability to hold such events and his past experience. Most agencies give special prices to re-known promoters. For example: The border cities of Mexico, Ciudad Juarez and Monterrey get visits from globetrotting artists like Damian Lazarus and Nick Warren on very regular schedules. For theit promoters, the pricing is averaged differently, they usually buy in packages of two or three gigs all togheter.
Promoters that offer a more attractive appeal to agencies, specially promoters living in places where electronic music is still developing, might get lucky to book a world-renown talent at lower prices, as agencies will try to build a scene where there is none.
In the music industry there are a lot of "players", "pimps", "marketting whores" and of course, "musicians". One of the things they all have in common, like in all fields of business, is the necessity to spread rumours and false information where there is no knowledge whatsoever. Thus said, believe less on what you hear in forums, websites or even some of the things your friends say. If you want any information regarding bookings and pricing, direct yourself to the artist agency, that's why they have an office in the first place.

Carl Cox doesnt get 40,000
Infact, the amount of people who get even close to that, can be counted on 1 hand. |
Regarding gigs at clubs, exactly true, there're no doubts there.
Festivals is where they can make SERIOUS cash.
Personally know for a fact Tiesto got paid $125000 USD at a recent fest. |
