Since each state is technically allowed to change their drinking age (government funding for roads will be taken away though...), why doesn't one state just rebel? I mean, yes taxes would go up, but I'm sure they would make a ton of money with the alcohol they sell (up the taxes on that, too).

Does anyone know if there are other vices that the federal government uses to keep the drinking age at 21?

Why would people want their state to forfeit its road funding and make alcohol way more expensive just so that young people won't be hassled by the police when they are caught being drunk in public?

Have you ever heard of Waco, Texas, Caela? That's what happens when you divide yourself from the US Government. >.>

Really though, it is quite useless questioning the nature of a law that will not even affect you in a year anyways. When the day comes when they are able to arrest underage kids for being drunk in their own home (when there is no prior or otherwise trouble), then I will see how it is infringing on people's basic human rights. Until then, police are just the hand of the law, not the law, itself, who are simply doing their job to keep drunk people safe and off the street. I hate to take the ' happens' approach to laws, because in this country, these sorts of things are up for debate (which is good), but really - this is just the price you pay for having laws to keep people from making asses of themselves or killing/injuring others out of negligence. Of course the laws aren't perfect, but what law actually is?

My last drinking citation was given to me in my own home!!! I had some friends over, and unfortunately was the only one under 21. My former neighbors downstairs were crackhead junkies that called the cops whenever we walked too loudly (they even called, accusing us of 'whispering to them through the floorboards'). So a cop showed up for a "noise complaint", I answered the door since I lived there. I had only a few beers and was far from being in the bag. I wasn't holding ANYTHING and nothing could be seen from where he was standing outside the door. He was some rookie prick with something to prove...I guess he smelt it on my breath, and he wrote out a ticket...no breathalizer or anything. WTF :wtf:

Well, if you're a minor and you've been drinking, it is illegal...

You know, when I wrote what I did, I was anticipating a story just like this one... :stongue:

Yeah, it's illegal for minors to drink alcohol. Like I said though, if you're not causing trouble or making lots of noise, then they aren't going to catch you. It's bull you can get in trouble for drinking in your own home, but they only know about it if you are throwing some huge party or doing something else high profile. As for your downstairs neighbours, Caela...well, that just sucks. Sounds like their fault, not the law. haha

The only times I've actually consumed alcohol have been in the last six months, and I'm 19. I seriously fail to see how not drinking makes somebody a loser. It doesn't, and if you think that drinking is a requirement for being "cool" then that's a bit disappointing.

What are you on about? Being drunk in public is soooooooo cool!

Caela
what? you're telling me in high school, you never got drunk with your friends? or went to parties and played beruit? or drank after prom? pfffff...then again this IS an internet forum.:p ;)

edit: keep in mind, i DO live in vermont. no that's not a good reason to drink...but if you're from small town america, then you know what it's like to experience true boredom. growing up here, 90% of kids drank. in burlington, there are 5 colleges/universities around town...lots and lots of bored kids = lots and lots of drinking. on a weekend night, you literally can walk down the main streets, and walk into a random party, play a few games of beruit and bounce to another party. it's just the vibe here...i didn't mean to come off as "you have to drink to be cool" but from where i'm coming from, here, if you don't drink you don't really have a social life because everything revolves around that. sad but true.
