Street Racing

I'm curious as to what everyone thinks about a proposed change to the Highway Traffic Act. The Ontario government has proposed an expanded definition of street racing that would charge even solo drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 50km/h.
In the spring, Premier McGuinty enacted tougher street racing laws that increased maximum fines to $10,000 and permitted police to seize cars for up to a week.
Nearly 40 people have died in the GTA since 1999 because of racing. |

| Disagree. 50 over is really not that much - if you were racing, you'd be over far more than that. In July, I got busted doing 130 in an 80. It was through Algonquin Park, on Saturday morning (so there was no one else on the road). I know when I drive recklessly, and that wasn't it. 100 over the limit sounds more accurate to nab street racers, not just speeders. |

Good move I say.
Really, once you start pushing 30km/h over the speed limit regardless of where you are, its starting to become reckless driving, especially once you start getting mixed in with people who are driving the speed limit, and the old-fogies who are going under it.
There is no reason to be going 50km/h above the speed limit, and IMO - you deserve what you get for going that fast. |

| I agree completely......if you are doing 50 km/hr over the speed limit you are a danger to everyone on the road. IMO....if you are caught doing more then 50 km/hr over the speed limit you should have your licence taken away permanently. |

I call that bull.
I know a lot of people here do 150km/h on the 400 series highways when it permits.
Hell, a lot of time the flow of traffic in the fast lane is going at least 150km/h. So if the flow of traffic was goign this speed, would everyone be pulled over and charged with "street racing"? |

150 on a highway is nothing!
100 in a 50 zone, yeah, different story |

150km/h on the highway is too much. It'd be one thing if the speed limit was 120-130 and the majority of the traffic was moving at that speed. But when the limit is 100 - having people going 50/over is too fast.
Going 20-30 over is fine, especially if most traffic is moving along at that speed anyways, but 40-50 over is pushing it. |

Obviously there will be some discretion left to the officer.
If you're weaving through lanes on the 401 at 150km/h, that's a lot different than going 130km/h on some back road up in the sticks.
Also, keep in mind that the majority of speeding tickets issued have already been reduced one grade (ie: getting stopped doing 120km/h in a 100km/h zone and getting cited for 115km/h)at the time of citation to mitigate the number of people who fight speeding tickets and force the officer into court on days off and time that could be spend on patrol. |

| I agree with the charge. I disagree with confiscating and crushing people's cars. The government should NEVER have the right to do that. It's just one more step toward becoming a totalitarian state, |

Coming from someone who has been ticketed (and summoned to court) for speeding (154km/h on the 400) - I'm all for it.
I was younger, more careless, and drove like I owned the ing road. After that, I still ended up getting two more tickets shortly there after. By the following year, I had 5 tickets on my record and was in jeopardy of losing my license with a 6th.
After that, I was paying $4000 for insurance (every six months).
Enforcing something like this will just give younger dickwads (like myself at that age) more to think about when they push the pedal to the metal, therefore less likely to put others in danger. |

OMG 40 whole people? The number of other problems which have killed more people are endless. Lets take care of those first. |
