How do you know that God is God and Devil is Devil?
If you define God as the positive energy that was behind the creation of the Universe, planets, life and all the life-creating and sustaining forces, the "spirit" that both "brings out" and "brings to" the goodness in all individuals and creatures, then you can say it's God...
If you define the "Devil", or just say "evil" as something negative, detrimental, harmful and destructive, the bad forces that are harming the world (in whatever negative way), then you can say that that's "evil" - not even the Devil as portrayed by the Bible for example, just some detrimental negative energy force...
Dissasociate God and Devil from any particular religious mythological representations and look only at the basis of the substance, there you'll have the answer. |

Regarding exorcism... I wouldn't be so brash as to outright declare it nonsence... but my apprach to it is that I tend to be rather sceptical. I think that medical sciences have advanced enough over the past couple of centuries to be able to identify or at least posit medical and psychological causes or hypotheses of abnormal behaviour and suggest medical and psychological treatments... I think that people who display signs of 'being possesed by the Devil' and attempt to undergo exorcist sessions with the goal of purging themselves, are or probably have been brainwashed too much by religious dogma, to the point that they may even have auto-suggestively transformed symptoms of any particular hidden underlying psychological disorder(s) to those that were shown in those videos, such as screaming and shaking and such... It's like those individuals themselves may believe that they are possessed by the devil so they start behaving in accordance with how they imagine the devil would present himself, and they persuade themselves into believing something quite possibly false... and the situation is not being made better by certain religious authorities (such as certain priests of whatever religion) that just encourage them to continue believing in this state of things and seek exorcist treatment instead of going to a doctor as well (??)...
Oh and btw, I didn't watch the videos... didn't need to, I've already seen something like this once on TV (I think it was on some CBC program like The Fifth Estate), so I can pretty much imagine what they contain. But I imagine they're not pleasant to watch anyways. |

LOL :gsmile: I think I'm not all that near to being a hippie, I just like to read and think about religion, philosophy, spirituality and all that... and then form my own opinion... :tongue2 |

Interestingly... the basis for satanism is the belief that Yaweh wanted to keep humans from reaching their potential, thus the commandment to Adam and Eve not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.... Satan, on the other hand, was trying to liberate us from Yaweh's rule by eating of the tree thereby gaining the ability to think for ourselves. |

| I find the whole concept of devil and exorcism ludicrous. i think the devil is just a personification for evil mentalities. All of us have this devil in us. His evil powers manifest themselves through bad human actions. Some choose to become "possessed" and do evil deeds in this world, others don't. Loosely stated, the evil inclinations of our mind can be suppressed through good actions or "Godly" powers. I think this is what the religious heads of antiquity wanted to say. But now this concept has been taken to the extreme where people actually claim to be possessed by a physical "devil" who needs to be driven out by a priest, who is the representative of God. |

that's a good point....i just thought of this documentary i seen once on exorcism and noticed all the videos used as examples of those posessed, were from third world countries in some small secluded communitites. The ppl in those communities are often very supersticious, they live their lives based on their religious fate, and obviously through the religious studies they have learned to believe in such things bc...they don't know any better...i'm sure there are many parts of the world where ppl's beliefs are such as before the scientific revolution |

(Yeah, Superstring's post kinda reminded me of satanism a little bit, moral relativism of religious assertions, ughh :()
So, to address your post, that is the satanist reinterpretation of the events in the Bible? Turn the story around and now it's God who's the bad one?
I have to point out that I myself hate satanism though, I only know it as the baaad cult where people sacrifice and torture children and babies and animals, and worship the 'Devil' as evil deity... and their other customs are weird and not likeable, like they dress in black and their churches are all dark and seem rather unpleasant from the inside (I've never been to one myself, I'm just talking 'bout what I saw on TV), so, naturally, I don't have a good view on it at all. |

I completely agree with you on this one... couldn't have stated it better myself :) |
