PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) — Codex Gigas, also known as the Devil's Bible — a medieval manuscript said to have been written 800 years ago with the devil's help — has returned to Prague after an absence of 359 years.
And Czechs were eager to see it, officials said Friday.
The priceless piece, considered the biggest medieval book, was taken from the Prague Castle by Swedish troops at the end of the Thirty Years' War in 1648. It is in Prague on loan from Sweden's Royal Library in Stockholm. It was put on display under high security at the Czech National Library.
Its return to Prague for Sept 20 — Jan 6 exhibition was made possible after years of negotiations between Czech and Swedish diplomats, National Library spokeswoman Katerina Novakova said.
"We expected big interest from the public," Novakova said. "Now, we are 100% full."
Only 60 people per hour can enter an air-conditioned room in the library's medieval complex in downtown Prague for a 10-minutes look at the manuscript, which is inside a specially designed, unbreakable case, she said.
According to myth, a Benedictine monk promised to write the book overnight to atone for his sins. When he realized the task was impossible, he asked the devil for help. The page with the illustration of the devil the one visitors see.
The manuscript was likely written by one monk from the Benedictine monastery in Podlazice located some 100 kilometers (65 miles) east of Prague sometime at the beginning of the 13th century, said Zdenek Uhlir, a specialist on medieval manuscripts at the National Library.
It contains "a sum of the Benedictine order's knowledge" of the time, including the Old and New Testament, "The War of the Jews" by the first-century historian Josephus Flavius, a list of saints, or a guideline how to determine the date of Easter, Uhlir said.
"I would estimate it took him between 10 and 12 years to write," he said about the piece, which weighs 75 kilograms (165 pounds). Originally, it had 640 pages, of which 624 survived in relatively good condition, he said.
The book was transported to the Czech Republic in a military plane. Authorities would not give any details about security measures adopted at the library. It has previously been displayed in New York and Berlin. |

Ok so heres the story...long but very interesting...
There is a place about 30 minutes north east of toronto called "ghost road" the place is pretty spooky, in fact it was featured on that show that used to come on "unsolved mysteries", twice. The place is a long dark dirt road with high trees on each side,...looks creepy..anyways the story is, this part I believe isn't true, but several years ago apparently a guy used to take a short cut to work on his motorcycle on that road to work which used to be a field and one day a farmer who owned that field put barb wire and bunch of other stuff and the biker dude got decapitated and now he comes haunts the place blah blah blah...of course when you here this stuff it just sounds silly but it was a hang out spot for many people at night and it is near a casino...so a few of my friends- one being a total anti-ghost guy, pure materialistic science freak, another who believes in this stuff and one neutral person heard about it and went to just check it out..they talked to a few people there and heard some stories...they were basically told on the motorsycle story...so one day they decided to go casino and on the way back go to the road and the girl who was into the spirit thing wanted to try a ouiji board there...the thing with ouiji boards people believe its one on three things: either someone is goofing around, or its your subconscious or its for real...obviously the science dude said it would be a waste of time but they all decided to try it and agreed no goofing around...so they went on a sunday night and no one was there..pitch black etc etc...anyways they tried it and "comunicated" with a couple who knows what but that proved nothing as it could of been someones subcon doing that part..anyways they went again and the girl wanted to try again..so they did and this time there were other people there..they asked my friends what they were doing there and they said ouiji and one of the people there replied that if they do ouiji they wil only end up talking to two "ghosts" named (forget the names) but they mentioned the exact same two names my friends "communicated with"..so thats 1 scenario where if it was one of my friend's subconcious the previous time, how could those strangers have known those exact same names?
so that was one weird thing...the next thing was, that same night those three and the others that were there did ouiji together, three of them did it while the rest watched, the three were in clear sight with no else around they said and the board was on a flat hard immovable surface..they started asking to show it was real blah blah blah and then about a minute after no movement they said literally the board went in the air about half a foot, very violently..they knew 100% no one there had it and everyone there freaked out...so at this pint, eventhough i know these guys and I believe them, its easy to say how come i believe in it when i wasnt there for any of this stuff? true enough...these guys were fascianted with the place..i went there couple times but just to hang out on the way back from casino and never did ouiji...but the real deal was when they went the next time and did the board...they came back, and at the time it didnt seem like anything special, just wierd where they said the board kept saying one of his friend's name (first and last), i didnt know the guy too well but i did know him..he was totally 100% fine, nothing wrong with the guy..anyways they came back and they said the board kept saying they have to help this guy, it spelt out his name (which isnt that big of a thing cause it couldve have been a sub-con. thing) and saying he is in real trouble blah blah blah, and it specifically spelt out "he will have leukhimia"...so one of em called the guy the next day just to see by chance if everything was ok (he was the only one that really knew they guy, anohter didnt know him at all and the third just seen him once), obvioulsy didnt tell him about the board but just a courtesy call i guess...after a while they thought it was just non sense and they forgot about it...anyways about 6-7 months later the guy was feeling sick, went to the doctors several times and did some tests and what do you know the poor guy is diagnosed with chronic leukhimia (sp?)..now if that isnt ED up I dont know what is |

I once read on an I-net forum where people were discussing ghosts and the supernatural and related stuff that people should not be doing these ouiji boards and ghost-calling and seances and the like. It's a bad form of entertainment and it may backfire on you.
That being said... I've heard or read other stories about such sessions, where they said the board was moving and answered questions. I've even read a story on the net where the participants asked "the ghost" to prove its presence in the room, and then suddenly after they asked it, all the light-bulbs in a big chandelier-type lamp above started to burst :conf:, which of course scared them ... so I wouldn't automatically believe or discredit the chance that there may very well be something about this phenomenon. Nevertheless though, it's still a controversial form of entertainment IMO... |
