People are pretty much split about the glowsticks, and yea, I've caught heat for it, but I just love doing it. May be childish to some people, but a lot of others think its cool too. If it's a HUGE outdoor event or a club with plenty of room, I don't see a problem stringing, and just having fun doin what I do. Break dancers the same way, and everybody else. Just be considerate to everyone.
But I notice that almost EVERYONE loves to watch fire poi spinning. Kind of glad I graduated to that, because a lot of fire spinners don't dig glowsticks either. Really wish I had a video camera to post some videos on the youtube..:o

Fire poi is a cool art in itself as well, and I think the reason why it's more respected is because there is that level of danger involved whenever you see anyone playing with fire. I'm not going to say that one is better than the other, but I do believe that glowstringing has more possibilities because of all the different wraps and string manipulations you can do without the risk of burning yourself. I've watched several fire poi performances myself as well as some on youtube done by professionals, and out of all of them I've not seen a single one do any kind of complex string manip. IMO I'd rather watch a talented glowstringer go at it with dual bicep wraps, spirals, bowtie orbitals, etc., than your average fire poi artist who can just do 5 beat weaves, flower patterns and the occassional toss. I'm a bit over the whole, "OMG he/she's playing with fire!" Thing. I'm more impressed with what a person's technical and creative abilities are brought into the performance, not with what light medium he/she chose.

DEFINATELY can do more with glowsticks. Fire is just more spectacular because for some reason people are just drawn to fire. But it does lack in the longevity because they burn out after a few minutes and you can't do as many complex things as you can with plain old glowsticks.

Yeah but fire doesn't have the whole 'lol glowsticks' thing that, well, glowsticks do.
I like dancing with glowsticks. No real reason other than that I like to have something in my hands when I'm dancing. Never seen someone try to give a 'lightshow' in a club/at a party.

You may be able to do a whole bunch of extra stuff with glowsticks instead of fire, but they're still glowsticks and people will expect you are a naive e-tard.

1. clueless wankers under the age of 18 (or 21 in the USA).
2. asians.
which group do you belong in?
25, SA born, UK based for the past 6 years, clubbing for a decade and I still dance with them.
I don't do poi because that s me off in clubs, but I dance pretty much the same with or without glowsticks, and I am ing good (spent 3 years as a club dancer in SA)
I enjoy it, first and foremost, and if anyone around me does, bonus.
I certainly don't give it a name, I'm just dancing with glowsticks. :p
I do use photons more nowadays because I'm a cheap bastard, lol

All the glowstick hating is pretty misdirected, and spawned mostly (I guess) from the etard stigma that usually accompanies them.
Some of you complain about the space they take up (legitimate), but I think you're confusing inconsiderate people for an inconsiderate practice. There are inconsiderate people in any walk of life. Like you've never seen anyone without glowsticks flailing and bouncing around the dancefloor into other folks without regard? Worse yet... what about the people that not-so-subltely ease up behind you until they're practically grinding in your colon in a pathetic excuse to cop a feel and invade your space on a crowded dance floor? What about folks that feel they cant enjoy an edm show unless theyre 5 feet from the dj, so they daisy chain with 7 of thier rudest friends and make a bum rush to the front, pushing over anyone in thier way? And lets not forget big sweaty shirtless guy who places himself directly in front of you and proceeds to bounce in all directions, invariably bouncing back to leave a nice layer of backsweat on your arms after a failed attempt to nudge him away. Are these folks not equally annoying? But wait... no glowsticks...
The point is, its not the practice... its the people. There are s everywhere; with and without glowsticks.
As for the folks who complain that the glowstickers are just there to "perform" and "be seen"; you mean to tell me that every bleach-blond cum-dumpster with fake DD's splitting through a miniscule top, with 3 foot high platform boots leading halfway up to thier vagina-revealing mini-skirts arent also looking to "be seen?" Or do they dress that way because it's comfortable? What about the 'roid infused, tribal-arm-band sporting muscle head who thinks that his tiny wife-beater tank is too hot and feels the need to disrobe and flex his sweaty shirtlessness all night,(ensuring that some of it at some point drips on you) even though the club is a comfortable 76 degrees? You mean he's not trying to "be seen?" What about the folks that think that thier particular brand of heel-hopping arm flailing is so wonderful that they need to take up 20 (sic) folks worth of space to bounce around? Is he not there to "perform?"
Once again, this boils down to inconsiderate people... regardless of what they have in thier hands.
Bottom line, a dude with glowsticks taking up 5 peoples worth of space annoys me no more that a dude without taking up 5 peoples worth of space.
Is glowsticking old? Sure. I just think the hating is misdirected. Different strokes for different folks? Or are all of you haters just that prententious? Just remember... a day will come when one of the activities (styles) that you enjoy or think is chic will go out of style... and you will have a whole new generation of kids that didn't experience it at the time, but nonetheless look down on it as being outdated and cheesy.
