For the record, I most enjoy trance and progressive for their effects on a dancefloor, not for anything imaginary. People can talk all they want about people getting down to house or techno, but the most amazing memories I have of people dancing involve progressive.

I don't think he gets what I am saying but it's not that much different from what he is saying just not as concise. Music does things to different people, but trance is more evocative to me..because of it's overproduced, melodic, emotional edge, but I like a lot of deep progressive stuff that is more subtle, that does it as well. I personally (it is my opinion) that house and techno are not as evocative, and I prefer them as dance music on a dance floor to trance because I don't need that over-produced, melodic, emotional rollercoaster type stuff while dancing, I just want to dance and have fun. This is all my opinion, I don't mean to make it out to be like I speak for everyone else, I just see things a little differently and would like to be respected for that and not treated as if I am an idiot for having a different opinion. And I don't like being in the minority or not having anyone at least attempting to understand what I am saying (Petran can do it, he's pretty good at it). I like dreamy music, trance is dreamy to me, so I dream away to trance music to think about things, write things, read things etc.

dude,

IF you're being treated like an idiot, it's because you write sentences like
" I like dreamy music, trance is dreamy to me, so I dream away to trance music to think about things, write things, read things etc."

i completely understand what you are saying. good for you. i dream a lot as well.

but if you believe trance music is somehow superior in regards to evoking anything or creating images, or whatever you want to call it, i think you're mistaken and under-listened

Your writing reeks of everything I hate about melodic and epic trance music.

fluffy
unclear
bland
confusing
obfuscatory
overthought
excessive

I understand what you're saying, but you could say it with far fewer words. Asking others to sift through sloppy language for intended meaning is no way to win friends.

Granted, you're trying to describe your experience with art, which everyone has difficulty explaining. But try to be a little clearer.

did you ever consider

that maybe the reason you don't feel it puts images in your head

is because your imagination is rather narrow?

for me what is important is not an "image" which inspires the creation of superficial and melodramatic music, but a true feeling created by the actual ing soundwaves flowing through your body!!!

that is more inspiring than anything to me... it is real healing power

images are false prophets. it's like eating sugar candy compared to a big juicy steak

It's my opinion! dude I can have an opinion that it does it for me personally. It's more evocative to me...personally. I like deep house, that's evocative, but vocal house or hard house or funky house...that's dance floor stuff.... I don't listen to that stuff that much at home, but I would much prefer it on a dancefloor. Lots of lyrics, funky basslines and melodies and percussion....that's all about forgetting trying to think or dream or whatnot and just have fun. But a track with a sweeping melody is something I like. I dare to make it, but trance does what classical does to me as well...I feel the same about classical and romantic music, because they are melodic. I like Chopin's music, because to me..it's evocative. He might not have been trying to tell a story or make theme music or whatever, but to me when I've listened to his music, it does it. Trance does that to me. Not every track does that. There's many tracks that don't do it at all. But certain ones..yes, they do. I can name many of them, but I don't have all night.

I'm a hopeless romantic, dreamer, thinker, pseudo-intellectual (I don't really try to be intellectual or smart, but maybe insightful) whatever. I like music that reflects my personality. Melodic trance does it. But that does not mean I buy anything on Beatport that has a melody or is trance. I can't change who I am. I've always been a dreamer and highly imaginative, since I was a young kid. And I just so happend at 13 to find a style of music that reflected it (but there is music that does reflect it even more that i've found as well, and even got into before I got into trance...stuff like Enigma and Moby).

Before this gets buried, I do think there's something to be said about the different psychological effects of dance music. Really good progressive trance at its peak did things to me while dancing that most house never, ever has. Some techno approximated it. None of those differences involve evoked images, only evoked sensations. Don't trash on trance and progressive too hard -- they were well-regarded and widely popular for good reason.

is that what your myspace quiz told you?

why does every ing thread you get involved in have to revolve around your inane personal self-discovery???

yes, definitely. but to be so utterly fixated on this is just scary IMO. Don't think I am hating on trance - I love darker, deeper trance. I only wanted to respond to and shoot down this insane belief that melodic trance is somehow more conducive to imagination. i can rattle off a list of house tracks that are extraordinarily evocative in the way Spirit5 fetishizes.

:haha:
Spirit5
Artists that aren't trance that are more evocative than trance IMO but follow some of to me the same emotional and melodic qualities of trance IMO.

Ulrich Schnauss
Amethystium
Lanterna
Hammock
BT (with his This Binary Universe)
Enigma (the more ambient sounding stuff)
Steve Roach
Jean Michel Jarre
Tangerine Dream
Klaus Schulze
Schiller (not so much the pop-vocal stuff)

This insane belief is my belief. It's my opinion. You act again like I can't have an opinion. You can feel free to disagree but don't disrespect me because I don't share the same opinion as you. That's not what my "MySpace" quiz said, it's just how I view myself...

Let's all gang up on me, the person none of you guys even know yet think you know because of his long ass posts on TA, not that he might have anything different to offer or any input into the discussion. I never intend to get these threads filled with bickering back and forth about whose opinion is better. I just state my views and I hope that it won't go on and on like they always seem to do. Maybe after everything I say I should put "In My Opinion" in bold type so everyone can see that I intend to say this is my opinion.

Understood.

i wanted out of this thread

but just so that my contribution is a little more constructive, here are a few house and techno (and some other) tracks you might want to check out that I consider extraordinarily evocative, both in a visceral, bodily sense, and in an imaginary, mental sense.

Spirit5 - we are both interested in the power of imagination and I respect that about you. I consider myself also a collector of dreamy music. Just try to IMAGINE that other music than what you are familiar with can have the same power!
