I would say that it used the same Detroit formula that we hear from mid-90s only more polished and with better production-no different then whats happening with epic-trance today in comparison to the epic-trance of 98 (same formula, better production). Seriously i thing that i've heard all tracks of Voorn's new album in the past, only with lesser production. Now, thats ofcourse doesn't make it a bad album. It is indeed a good album for what it is (a detroit techno album).

As quite a big Voorn fan, I do understand what you're saying. Future History was bloody good, while I'm not a big specialist in techno classics, it seemed cutting-edge enough for me. The latest album however... sounded like he took the ideas from Future History, added a bit of an accessible feeling to it, almost epic-trance-like ("The Deep" is the track that reminds me the most of epic trance) and the end result simply isn't as good. But I still enjoy listening to it a lot.

I wish my struggles were as cleanly linear. I could survive the Great Progressive Slowdown. I could even survive the Arminization of Trance, by clinging to the fragments of progressive and techno that appealed to me. But I was totally lost when electro-house took over, and numb by the time minimal captured the crown. I find bits and pieces here and there -- Ame, Agoria, Tiger Stripes, Cobblestone Jazz -- but most of it is a wasteland to my ears. Only the rise of deep house gives me any hope, and it's a vague one at that.

I know, I know, bring out the violin. But not everyone has moved on as you have.

Well, everyone has their own tastes and experience. I didn't intend to fully generalize what I wrote to absolutely every listener. Sometimes people's tastes stop changing and they try to hold on to a genre or group of genres - I feel that in some sense that has applied to me too, the last couple of years my taste didn't change as much as in the past. But I do think that many people's tastes are affected by bandwagons. A lot.

Other things that bug the crap out of me is "I just don't want to listen to a set I want to take a journey." or when people make it into a spiritual thing like "Good dance music is when everyone is lost in the floor in the groove and things like people having sex on the dance floor just seems normal and everything is perfect with the world at that instant." I remember that Ishkar dude saying something like that in the past and I was like "what a freak."

I just don't understand this train of thought. I'm thinking people are just so insecure with themselves that they latch themselves onto the music they listen to and try to portray that stereotype. It's as bad as the emo kids that cut themselves, wear black make-up, and write poetry. Music is music and nothing more. People listen to what they like but to change their entire personality and image based on the music they listen to is completely insane to me. Sure, this thread is a little bit of a flame bait but I'm interested in what people think about this type of thought in EDM.

What you all think? I honestly thought this type of thinking about dance music died out around 2002 but lately it seems to be coming back.

maybe that feeling died for you...

but for alot of ppl it hasnt died and its only grown on them.

when i listen to trance it still puts me in that angelic kinda feeling, where u just wanna lay back anbd close ur eyes and dream of something wonderful. trance to met is still beautiful and spiritual in a way.

Cobalt do you DJ? When I started looking for music myself as opposed to getting it through the eyes of someone else, it made a profound difference in the way I listen to this music and what I like...

Funny you should ask that, because I was just about to put together my first demo in about two years. Some recent material from Soma and Cocoon has appealed to me, for example.

I actively DJed 2002-2005, and not just in my bedroom. I played university parties in SoCal and a few times in clubs when I moved back to Florida. Trance had already begun to dry up by the time I started, so I played progressive. When progressive got tossed out the window in 2005, and producers started switching sides, good progressive records became hard to find. Around the same time, our local scene collapsed, and I became disillusioned. I kept trying to find something new to be enthusiastic about, but it never happened. In fact, I didn't buy a single record for over a year.

So yes, I do understand the view of the scene as a DJ. But it's been a long time since I picked up on the trail of something that really connected with me. At the same time, I can go back to the 90s and still enjoy most of what I find.

Please go away. Honestly.

TONS of examples?

Please list some of these examples of minimal/tech house FULL of emotion and melody, I mean Jesus H. Christ I've been dying to jump on the minimal/tech house bandwagon for two years. I was praying to Jesus every night that I would be cool just like all the other leet TA househeads. I've got to hear these tracks. I never even knew it was possible for a minimal/tech house track to be even remotely interesting.

Pretty much sums it up right there. You think I'm going to waste my time going through my reciepts and listing for you? :stongue:
Paradox Lost
To be fair, he did include the disclaimer "I think..." Although I can't see it in the tracks I've come across (despite my best efforts), who knows what kind of emotional connection some people forge with these tracks, despite them not being as overtly emotional as some other genres.

Well by doing so you might be able to change my mind. In fact just one example is good enough. I'm sure you know at least one track off the top of your head.

Edit: the track has to be minimal/tech house, and FULL of emotion/melody

Define "FULL" Bursting at the seams like some ridiculously dramatic Above & Beyond track? Something like Schmuel Flash - Chilling Moments?

Like Paradox Lost was saying, it's not the vocals that we talk about in emotion. I really don't like 90% of vocal trance out there. But there are PLENTY of emotional trance tracks out there that have no vocals, but raw emotion in the melodic and atmospheric parts of the track. Just listen to Hydra's "Affinity (Thrillseekers Dub)" if you want emotion, or Solar Stone's "Seven Cities (Atlantis Mix)", no vocals, just pure emotion...beauty and euphoria. That's journey music right there. You go way back in the early 90s and Cosmic Baby's music was full of emotion too.
