Quick Question about LA (pg. 2)

mmm...looks like there's a SOLID 120...maybe 125 people there?

lol@"doesn't know any DJ's". Yah, that's me! I have NO IDEA who any DJ's are.

I was listening to EDM, when you were still dancing to Madonna in the late 80's over at Circus. ;)

TSG, you promote for Circus. It's no coincidence that never you recommend any other party EXCEPT the one going on at Circus.

Circus can still have a good night here and there, just like a cancer patient can have a rare "good day" now and again. But that club is as dead as they come, and you know it.

One day soon, Circus will be closed for good. Then what are you going to do? Who are you going to promote for? And why will it be that whomever you are promoting for, suddenly, THAT will be the best party in town? Isn't it just an AMAZING coincidence that whomever you are promoting for is ALWAYS throwing THE best party?? As a promoter, I think your recommendations need to be taken with a HUGE grain of salt, and I have every right to say so...sorry if that bothers you. I don't know why you're even bothering anymore. Isn't the venue closing very soon?

And the only reason you don't see me out anymore is because I don't go to Circus (for reasons already stated). Try stepping outside of that venue once in awhile...then, I'll see you "around" ;)

I'm sure the guy is asking where to go to check out trance and not "where can I go to party it up in LA". Obviously Circus would be the best bet. In terms of a crowd, sure it's not crowded but that doesn't necessarily mean it's "bad". And to say that Giant is the best of the three is laughable at best...especially when it comes to talent. DJ Dan and Donald Glaude? Please :stongue:

As far as the physical aspects of the club, Vanguard and Avalon are pretty sweet. Both offer amazing sound systems and great DJs (usually not trance btw), but the crowd at Vanguard is a ing mess. So sure, hit up Vanguard if you feel like hanging out with waitresses soon to be actresses and the latest line of Affliction t-shirts. Go to Avalon if you want to hang out with an army of cracked out old folks (not all...but check out the people in the front of the main room...yikes!) or a smoky, hot patio. Or go to Circus where you'll hear the music you like in maybe a not so likable setting with far less people.

And I've been to all 3 pretty regularly, no bias towards any of the venues...just the music :p

^^^I'll give you that, the boy did ask for "trance". But for the lack of crowd that will be there, he might as well just put a trance CD in the player back at his hotel room and party there.

Well, to each his own. I'd disagree about Avalon having a comparable sound system to Vanguard's. It sucks and it's set up all wrong. If it's not too loud, then it's got HUGE dead spots. It just never sounds good.

I have to put my unrequested $0.02 worth in on the topic of sound systems.

Vangaurd has the best system no matter where you are in the club.

But I have to say that hands down, no contest, the best thing I've heard in my life is the avalon system if you are dead center and 2/3 of the way back on the floor. If you aren't on the dance floor at avalon, then it definatly sounds like . But if you are, OMG...

I thought the hop around could work...going to Circus then Vanguard then Avalon. But since he asked for trance, and Vanguard's headliners are pretty housy.

Did and anyone inform our visitor that the LA trance crowd isn't the best looking! (Ask someone to teach you the washing machine to blend in) :toocool:

I thought the whole point to go to a club is to listen to the music and have fun. I didn't know it was all about the crowd then the music...

That's Donnie's idea of going out to a club. As he mentioned in one of his previous posts, he thinks the crowd at Vanguard is the best! :stongue:

The guy asked for Trance, so I mentioned RED@Circus. Whether I promote for Circus, Red, Spundae or whatever club it may be, you won't see me saying, "No don't go to Vanguard or Avalon, or...."

BTW, I also promote for FunXion and other clubs I may be asked to help promote. ;)

If you're donniebrasco, mar6498123, or any of his other alternate accounts it is :p

And I will say that Vanguard's FunktionOne system (although in theory better than Avalon's) has it's bad days just as Avalon has theirs. It all depends on who comes to tune the system on what day. Vanguard's perfectly tuned system blows Avalon's perfectly tuned system out of the water. But to say they're not comparable? Come on now, let's not be silly.

My experienece when it comes to traveling.. is you're traveling!! When you live near the clubs.. you can be more particular because... well you can go anytime you want.

Anytime I go anywhere.. whether it be restaurants..landmarks..clubs... I try to hit up everything.. so at least you say you've been there. Not like you're able to go back so often.

Party hop.. seriously. =)

Stop going to Avalon on after hour power nights when those imbeciles run the mixer into the red.

Also, Vanguard, while having a good system, is almost NEVER tuned right, either too low, too loud or with a mixer being run into the red making the funktion 1 sound muddy and pretty much worthless. Deadspots? LMAO, Vanguard has more dead spots than any big club I've been to in LA. Avalon has 6 sets of hanging speakers, 2 at the back 2 in the middle and 2 in the front...the only deadspots are when you leave the floor. At Vanguard if you're not standing towards the middle of the floor you mainly only hear 1 side of the audio.

Both systems are pretty much of the same caliber imo, it just depends on whether they have been tuned right, what kind of mixer they're on, and if that mixer is giving a clean signal. But one thing I love about Avalon is the placement of the sub cabinets, in front and at the back of the floor in lines, which imo give some of the best low-end of any dancefloor in LA.

If you want to see what an empty mega-club looks like, then sure, go to Circus. As a venue, it's pretty nice. It would be nicer if there were some people there and some DJ's worth hearing. But neither of those things are going to occur. Circus, as a popular venue, died a long, LONG time ago.

If you want an honest answer about having a good time at a club here in L.A. by someone on this board who doesn't have a vested interest and/or is NOT a promoter (me), then let me suggest that you hit up Vanguard for the "GIANT" show there.

It is by far the best mega-venue in L.A.; Best sound system, best visual presentation, best patio, best crowd (all things considered) and best DJ's compared to all others. Their 12/22 show will EASILY top Circus's show. DJ Dan isn't exactly trance, but I'm sure you'll enjoy his stuff a lot more than "DJ-Who the is that??" over at Circus. So don't even waste your time or money by going there...honestly.

Here's GIANT'S link;

They're also doing a Crystal Method show in Newport Beach on the 27th that you might be interested in.

Have fun! :D

PS-Amber; That was some funny , lol ;)

mmm...well, I happen to work with sound for a living, so I think I know a dead spot when I hear one. ;)

As you so aptly pointed out, there are speakers hanging and sitting that are pointing in all directions at Avalon. That in itself is DUMB. Anytime you send sound waves back at each other (either by reverberation off walls, or as in this case, by poor placement of speakers), you cause certain frequencies to cancel each other out.

Think of sound waves like waves in a pool. If you were to be at one end of the pool, and I at the other, and we were to both push our hands through the water at the exact same moment and with the exact same energy, we'd create identical waves...and when those waves met in the middle of the pool, their energy would meet and cancel each other out. And suddenly, the pool would be placid again. Same thing happens with sound waves, and that's how you get dead spots.

Sound MUST come from ONE direction ONLY! And reflection off of back walls and side walls has to be minimalized by using sound proofing, wall shaping and most importantly; Speaker placement.

That's why when you walk around the dance floor at Avalon, you'll hear the sound change DRAMATICALLY from one place to another. Those speakers may be good speakers, but no speaker can make up for lost frequencies caused by another that's placed incorrectly.

Exactly what I'm talking about. That sound system was designed for THAT spot, lol. Brilliant, eh? Nice, big club...and there's only one spot where it sounds GREAT. ;)

Oh right...let's all pretend that an empty club is a fun place to be.

Like I said; If it's all about the music, and the crowd doesn't matter, then why does ANYONE bother going out at all? You could sit in your car and play CD's all night long and be just as happy, going on that theory.

Please...we all know it's the total package when going out (sound system, lighting, crowd, location, etc.), as I mentioned already.

I hear you talk up Circus when it has a big turnout...now it doesn't matter? Make up your mind.
