Oh my god dude, you just found my biggest pet peeve of all time when clubbing. :p I cannot STAND places that think more volume = better. And more often than not this has been the case when I go to Vanguard. Just look at rukes' pics...they run the mixer to the top of the red nightly! Again, both can be better than the other depending on the tuning and setup. For a while, everytime I went to Avalon it sounded . Recently, this has not always been the case. I just think that when perfectly tuned and used right, Avalon's system delivers a better reproduction of the full range of sound than Vanguard (depending on where you stand of course). The low end at Avalon is powerfully present but very clear, whereas sometimes the bass at Vanguard can sound real muddy, especially when the mixer is in the red.

In any case i think we both agree that arguing about it is pointless, but like bas said in the beggining, they're both really ing good systems. Also, imo the theater setup sounds MUCh better than Vanguard's concrete rectangle...theres more space for the sound to escape upwards instead of reverberating all around the floor, and the walls are more absorbant. My opinion of course.

I agree that the bass in stronger it seems at Avalon. But when you can't hear the other frequencies in the dead zones, then I think it sounds bad.

But yah, there is no absolute right or wrong I suppose (unless we wanted to break out the spectrum analyzer and make exact measurements, lol ;) ). I know sound engineers who like a LOT of high end in their music, when I think it sounds like crap...and I know guys who've blown their ears and can't hear a damn thing anymore, so they turn up the volume and just make everything worse, while they keep saying "I can't hear it!"

As for those mixers running in the red, the Pioneer mixers are pretty forgiving, for one thing. For another, LED levels are literal in the way they measure amplitude. They appear to peak long before a traditional analog VU meter would. So you have to take what you see when it comes to LED meters with a grain of salt.

Also, I might add that the times when the bass sounds weak at Vanguard could be due to a number of things, not the LEAST of which is the penchant for some DJ's these days to play mp3's!

Sometimes, that's all a DJ could acquire, and I understand that. Play it only if you ABSOLUTELY have no choice! But come on DJ's, do us all a favor and don't cheap-out buying mp3's, just so you can purchase more music. It's bad enough that we're losing some range by going to CD's from LP's, but to go exclusively to mp3 is to just do a dis-service to your show and to your audience, IMHO.

I do agree that some DJ's know how to tune the function 1 better than others. It sounds amazing whenever Roger Sanchez hits the decks. I've noticed that Abletron (or whatever you call it) program takes away from the full effect as well.

The DJ has ing nothing to do with it other than whether or not they run in the red...

I seriously doubt you could tell the difference given the huge # of variables that could have the same effect on sound quality, and the fact that just a poorly mastered track could sound like no matter what medium it is delivered on. mp3's on a well tuned system > wav/vinyl on a poorly tuned system...so long as they are CBR 320 of course...

^^^Doubt all you want, but I can hear the difference between 44.1 and 48K when I record LP's to my pro DAT machine...as could any Engineer worth a damn. It's VERY obvious. You'd probably hear it too if I A-B'd the two for you.

There isn't an MP3 setting out there that will compare to 44.1...and MP3 was created for portability. Hence, mostly it was meant to be played back in headphones, where the frequency range is limited anyway. It was never intended to be blasted on huge sound systems.

Playing MP3's over CD's is like playing cassette tapes over LP's.

Vanguard has the best monitor speakers hands down!

Oh right...let's all pretend that an empty club is a fun place to be.

Like I said; If it's all about the music, and the crowd doesn't matter, then why does ANYONE bother going out at all? You could sit in your car and play CD's all night long and be just as happy, going on that theory.

That picture at Circus didn't look empty to me. Unless the people I see on there are just photochopped or something....

To answer your question about why bother going out at all? I like too for the fact that I want to see my favorite headliner play live in front me, then judge him/her if they're as good as what's on my CD or weekly radio show ;)

Is this forum called soundaddict.com or something? Because it seems like everyone is a professional Sound Engineer. It all sounds good once the drinks are kicking in! :D

The club isn't even at 1/10th it's capacity in that picture.

Here's a glimpse at roughly what it looks like when it's packed. You still can't see the whole club in this picture either. But it's capable of holding well over 2,500 people, and it used to get that kind of turnout...when it was worth going to. ;)

Yes master, you win the argument. Then again I have no room to speak since I've never been to any club in L.A. :O
