^^^lol...not trying to win, but thanks anyway. Just trying to give a more balanced and fair assessment of what to expect, should you out-of-towner's decide to hit this place up when you DO come to L.A. ;)
Nothing worse than wasting your vacation time, IMHO. |

| ;) I'll be there at Giant Maximus. Something different than our massives here! |

Here's a glimpse at roughly what it looks like when it's packed. You still can't see the whole club in this picture either. But it's capable of holding well over 2,500 people, and it used to get that kind of turnout...when it was worth going to. ;)

*ahem* That's when it's a BIG SPECIAL EVENT, the side rooms get opened too but you wouldn't know cuz you haven't been there during any of those times! :tongue2
Oh and BTW.... Donnie, STFU already! :stongue:  :stongue: |

^^^Doubt all you want, but I can hear the difference between 44.1 and 48K when I record LP's to my pro DAT machine...as could any Engineer worth a damn. It's VERY obvious. You'd probably hear it too if I A-B'd the two for you.
There isn't an MP3 setting out there that will compare to 44.1...and MP3 was created for portability. Hence, mostly it was meant to be played back in headphones, where the frequency range is limited anyway. It was never intended to be blasted on huge sound systems.
Playing MP3's over CD's is like playing cassette tapes over LP's. |
Exactly, I was talking about IN THE CLUB. How do you know the loss in quality isn't a poorly set amp/crossover/processor/cable? Mixer running a little high? I'm not doubting that in certain conditions you can tell the difference(I can too), I'm saying that with the # of unknown variables in a club, you'd be hard pressed to be 100% certain. Then theres the actual track mastering...
Anyways, I support playing the best format possible at all times (to tie in to your other thread)...but I started collecting tracks when I was poor so I got only 320 mp3s...it does make me feel stupid, like "what the hell am I going to do with all these in 10 years", but, having bought 1500 tracks in the past 2 years, I'm glad I have the extra 1500$ :p
I have a better job now though, so I'm planning on starting to buy...records. Yes, actual records. :p |

^^^lol...don't feel bad about records! They are still sonically superior to CD's (scratches, pops and clicks aside)...but with all of the other disadvantages that I'm sure you're aware of, and I won't bother going in to.
As for what may be causing loss of quality in the audio chain, yes, you are correct in saying that it could be any number of things. But as I stated in the other thread too, the goal is to make each link in your audio chain as strong as possible, so that you can, with confidence, say; "Well, at least the problem isn't coming from my music source, because I know that I'm playing the best source that I can"...and MP3's just aren't that source.
It's an interesting debate. And it's even more interesting how many DJ's DO play MP3' these days, for a lot of reasons (money being one factor, portability and accessibility the other). I just think MP3's are the evil scourge of mankind, lol. It was invented in a time when data capacity was limited for portable and even non-portable devices. But now, MP3 players can hold several gigs worth of music! Enough for quite a few full-sized CD's!
And we are getting to the point where a DJ can carry a respectable CD-quality library around with him in a small book-sized portable hard-drive, and/or on his lap-top. Not to mention CDJ's have improved dramatically too, hence larger libraries in smaller spaces (CD "books").
It's a step backwards to go from CD's (which are already old 80's technology) to MP3's. But just like the cassette tape, MP3 was created for portability, nothing more. It was never meant to be a replacement for the LP. Just like MP3 wasn't meant to replace CD.
If anything, we need to triple up on the frequency response of CD's if we want them to mimic what a master audio tape in a pro-studio can do, running at 30ips.
And TSG; Fine. Shutting up, lol :stongue: |

I forgot to mention something to the thread starter... I have yet to see or hear any complaints from any out-of-towner's first or only visit to CIRCUS. ;)

there's so much confusing stuff in this thread about sound and stuff and I feel like I'm still not clear on what is where, which place plays what type of music, where the most people are, the nicest venue, etc.
would anybody name the few, like circus, red, vanguard, avalon, etc and just list: is it nice? decent crowd? type of music? location? nights? talent? sound quality? or at least something like that. I have no idea what I'm doing. I'd love to read the whole thread again but its just so damn long!!!! |

I'm sure the guy is asking where to go to check out trance and not "where can I go to party it up in LA". Obviously Circus would be the best bet. In terms of a crowd, sure it's not crowded but that doesn't necessarily mean it's "bad". And to say that Giant is the best of the three is laughable at best...especially when it comes to talent. DJ Dan and Donald Glaude? Please :stongue:
As far as the physical aspects of the club, Vanguard and Avalon are pretty sweet. Both offer amazing sound systems and great DJs (usually not trance btw), but the crowd at Vanguard is a ing mess. So sure, hit up Vanguard if you feel like hanging out with waitresses soon to be actresses and the latest line of Affliction t-shirts. Go to Avalon if you want to hang out with an army of cracked out old folks (not all...but check out the people in the front of the main room...yikes!) or a smoky, hot patio. Or go to Circus where you'll hear the music you like in maybe a not so likable setting with far less people.
And I've been to all 3 pretty regularly, no bias towards any of the venues...just the music :p |

Yes master, you win the argument. Then again I have no room to speak since I've never been to any club in L.A. :O |
You will soon. Just one more week :D The layout of Circus is not as cool as the Church, but its all about the vibe, the taco lady & Ernestos :D :D |
