Went off topic a bit but the point is to say that Toronto is such a safe city and thats a great thing. Is it perfect? no. but when I see threads about the media-spazz-out over one murder, I feel like (yes that sucks) but you all should be greatful that you dont live in a city like myself, where isnt even put in the paper anymore because no one cares....it just happens way toooo much. I have been in front of cross-gunfire TWICE since I moved here and 3 other times when I was INSIDE. I also have at least 10 clients been shot or stabbed since I started and I have one girl, who is the sweetest thing ever, get cought up in a gang fight a couple months ago, and now she is up for attempted murder, asssult with a deadly weapon and gang-related violence charges. And she doesnt see the big deal. ffs. Take that^^ and be thankful.

Actually the main gangs here are the Bloods and Crips.
Funny that you guys mention the stars, here's why:
(A breif background of blood/crip symbols)
Bloods:
5-point star
the color red
93
3-spot burn marks on their bodies
M.O.B
Beads in sequences of 5 (ie: the 5-point star)
Crab (what they call the Crips)
....and a ton of other stuff....for instance, have you ever heard a rapper or someone yell "Bratt bratt" (kinds like "bullet, bullet!") thats also a Blood Symbol
For the Crips:
6-point star
BK
Beads in sequences of 6 (ie: the six point star)
C-LOC
Slob (what they call the Bloods)
the Color Blue
(both gangs wear grey to say they are "going to war" meaning something is gonna go down btw the two)
Folks or Folk-life
**also one of the most popular DANCES you see rappers/dancers in hip hop doing is actually a CRIP dance (I will try to find a vid.) If you watch carfully, the foot work they do actually spells out the word CRIP.)
Kings:
3-pointed crown OR a 5-point start with a pithc-fork pointed down (equals disrespect to the folk nation)
ALKQN (they dont use the Q in Chicago, only NYC: they dont believe in women in the gang there)
Yellow and Black
360 beads in sequence of 5 black, 5 yellow
^^I could go on and on......about the secret language....these kids know how to write better in their gang language than they do english sometimes. I know the symbols in graffiti, the hand symbols (there is MANY more hand symbols than the general public knows about), the code names for EVERYTHING down to the littlest things, the sports wear symbols, the meetings, the body marks, the hierarchy of gangs, you can think of it, I probably know something about it.
These are generally universal symbols, but there is a lot of conflict amongst city gangs and making their "own." Also, most of these gangs were once connected, for instance, the CRIPS actually segregated themselves from the Black Panthers back in the day (los Angeles) to form their own group, because they felt like they tactics they were using were inefficient. They took things into their own hands, so to speak.

lol no need when you work in the south Bronx with 20-something clients who fill you in (or you pick up on when working with them everyday).

I work for a clinical agency who hires therapists and clinicians. My agency put me at an alternative school for older teens (18-23) in the bronx, who had to leave high school due to incarceration, juvey, correctional facilities, trauma in the home, etc. (or simply dropped out from gang-related activity or crimes).
I am essentially the school therapist for these "kids" (i use the term lightly because they are college-aged). Most of them are sent here because they have committed serious crimes or have been severly traumatized by whatever goes on at home (a lot of prostitution, drugs, sexual/physical abuse, torture, homelessness, etc..........)
