this used to be a trance event, right?

notice the heavy use of marketing and the distinct lack of dance music...

A more close to home example... The "Dance" sections of stores like Best Buy/Media Play, FYE, etc look VERY different from what they used to be 5 years ago. For one thing they are smaller, as execs would rather fill that shelf space with an expanded "Rap" section. Why is the "Dance" section losing shelf space? Is it because there are no more good releases? No, there are plenty of good releases that come out every month. The most likely reason for this downsizing is that the music in the "Dance" section is not selling as well as it used to, so the execs at Best Buy, etc have made the decision to use their stores' shelf space for the more profitable "Rap" albums. Inventory that is not moving is wasted store space and lost money for a company like Best Buy. Notice that I never mentioned the quality of the music in the "Dance" section, because for the store execs quality isn't an issue. How many units (of CDs) are being moved and how quickly inventory is being turned over is the only thing that a retail exec is likely to care about when he/she decides to give less space to the "Dance" section.

Also notice the make up of the releases that are now inhabiting the "Dance" section of your local big-name retailer. ATB, DJ Irene, DJ Sammy, PVD, Tiesto, Oakenfold, and a load of Ministry Of Sound "The Annual" comps and other rubbish "generic" compilations. I remember walking into Media Play 5 years ago and being able to pick up most of Aphex Twin's discography, Squarepusher stuff, FSOL CDs. Hell, "Selected Ambient Works 2" wasn't exactly the most mainstream album on the shelves, but it was in stock at these stores. Unfortunately, none of these albums sold as well as they should have, and as a result we suffer by having a "Dance" section that consists of nothing more than the most mainstream Dance releases (ie Tiesto's new album), Oakie back-catalogue stuff (although stuff like "A Voyage Into Trance" and "Tranceport" are slowly being phased out for "Creamfields" and "A Lively Mind"), and random Baby Anne and DJ Irene CDs (at least in this area).
