Foreign Films: Reviews and Suggestions!!!

Just starting a thread out of selfish greed...really starting to dig foreign films...not the necessarily the hipster Lisa Leob sipping on a coffee mug the size of a fish bowl type but I'm willing to give anything a try...
My first suggestion is "The Sea Inside" Spanish film based on a true story, of a man who was paralyzed in his 20's cliff diving and fought the government to legally end his life with dignity for 30 years from his bed...along the way people who are for and against his wishes learn alot about the meaning of life, touched by his thoughts and advice.
IMO a beautiful flick
I hope this gets the ball rolling

Arguably THE BEST for foreign film I've ever seen. Simply incredible.
Ask Graham, he finally watched it over in France after my urgings a couple of times.
I only regret that I couldn't have been the one to introduce him to this film and watch it with him.
I'd have LOVED to have discussed this film with him after just watching it.
The movie is, as I said above, simply incredible. Love the multi-cultural aspect of it all. :)
Even the name "L'Auberge espagnole" is a french play on words! Brilliant film, all around.

Fälscher, Die (The Counterfeiters)
The Counterfeiters is the true story of the largest counterfeiting operation in history, set up by the Nazis in 1936. Salomon "Sally" Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) is the king of counterfeiters. He lives a mischievous life of cards, booze, and women in Berlin during the Nazi-era. Suddenly his luck runs dry when arrested by Superintendent Friedrich Herzog (Devid Striesow). Immediately thrown into the Mauthausen concentration camp, Salomon exhibits exceptional skills there and is soon transferred to the upgraded camp of Sachsenhausen. Upon his arrival, he once again comes face to face with Herzog, who is there on a secret mission. Hand-picked for his unique skill, Salomon and a group of professionals are forced to produce fake foreign currency under the program Operation Berhard. The team, which also includes detainee Adolf Burger (August Diehl), is given luxury barracks for their assistance. But while Salomon attempts to weaken the economy of Germany's allied opponents, Adolf refuses to use his skills for Nazi profit and would like to do something to stop Operation Bernhard's aid to the war effort. Faced with a moral dilemma, Salomon must decide whether his actions, which could prolong the war and risk the lives of fellow prisoners, are ultimately the right ones. |

Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War
-Korean film about two bros in the Korean War. War scenes makes Saving Private Ryan look bad. Lots of action. Lots of violence.
Silmido
-about a group of convicts being trained to assassinate Kim Il Sung in the 70s. Lots of violence. Don't watch if you don't like innuendos of a woman getting raped
Sophie Scholl: The Final Days
-Movie about an anti Nazi resister in ww2. Very powerful and moving. Nominated for Academy award in 06 IIRC |

The movie I'm sure many, many will mention here:
Love it. The sound track is FANTASTIC. Some great techno, if I recall correctly!!
And this movie first introduced me to Franka Potente. I forever will be thankfull to my gf at the time for making me watch this foreign film with her!! :disbelief

Pans Labyrinth was really good, it was very dark for a fantasy movie and is definitly not a kids movie. |

I enjoyed it, but felt many parts could have been elaborated on...movie could have been a 4 hr movie I'd watch start to finish |
