The Canadian politics thread (pg. 10)

At this point, if you think that any of the other parties will serve the Canadian public any better, you're just as ed in the head as they are.

What we see as traditional politics has simply become a convenient mask for a corporate oligarchy that is by-and-large calling the shots. Unless you're actual friends with a politician, believing that any politician is out to serve your best interests is like believing that aluminum pop can tabs can be collected to make wheelchairs.

You can vote in PC, Lib, NDP - none of it is going to make a difference, as these days political leadership seems to be at its inept, self-serving apex.

Is this man insane? seriously I dont understand how people can possibly support Harper and his politics..

I thought the Harper and the Conservatives were in favour of markets and competition, especially when it comes to the possibility of reducing taxes by billions of dollars! Where are your core principles now, you hypocite? For something so costly, how ing stupid is it to not consider different bids? The lack of openess smacks of how governments behave in planned economies like China, where people are told to just trust the government. Surely, there is nothing to lose and everything to gain from a tendered deal, unless there are other personal, in-kind benefits. At the moment, it stinks of corruption and shady back-room dealings.

OTTAWA—With Parliament careening toward an election, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff is toughening his attacks on Stephen Harper, saying the Prime Minister is spending “like a drunken sailor” and will stop at nothing to stay in power.

Ignatieff, whose party may have a chance to defeat the Conservative minority government this week, blasted Harper for tolerating a Tory website that suggests the Liberal leader is embellishing his family’s struggle as immigrants in Canada.

“Their attack on me is a disgrace,” Ignatieff said on CTV Sunday. “They’ve attacked my patriotism. They’ve attacked my commitment to the country. And now they’re attacking my family.”

His anger was touched off by a statement on a Conservative-backed website that says Ignatieff’s parents were richer and more privileged as immigrants than the Liberal leader acknowledges.

Ignatieff denied this, saying his family lost everything in the Russian Revolution and “came here with nothing.”

“These personal attacks are unprecedented in the history of Canadian democracy,” Ignatieff added. “Canadians got to ask themselves: Is this the kind of politics you want? This is a prime minister who is prepared to say anything to hold on to power.”

Ignatieff also sharply criticized the Conservatives’ recent spending spree, which has contributed to a $100 billion deficit over two years. “The pattern of waste and highly partisan spending, just to win an election, I think destroys his credibility as an economic manager,” the Liberal leader said.

His comments reflected the increasingly bitter brinkmanship in Parliament that will come to a head in the next few days over Tuesday’s federal budget and a series of flare-ups over government conduct.

The minority Conservative government could face votes of confidence in the Commons this week over the budget package and over charges that the government is in contempt of Parliament for withholding spending information from MPs. A defeat of the government on such a vote would force an election, so the Conservative minority in the Commons needs the support of at least one of the opposition parties to stay in power.

Speculation emerged on the weekend that the Bloc Québécois, which has vowed to vote against the budget, might reverse course because of an imminent financial deal between Ottawa and Quebec. The Bloc has been demanding $2 billion in compensation for Quebec for adopting the HST sales tax, and the Quebec government is saying a deal with the federal government to do so is close. But Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s office on Sunday played down the likelihood that an agreement could be reached soon enough to sway the Bloc’s budget vote.

This week’s political showdown opens Monday when a Commons committee is expected to find the government in contempt of Parliament, setting the stage for a possible confidence vote later in the week. On Tuesday, Flaherty tables the 2011 budget, which will be debated on Wednesday and could lead to make-or-break vote for the Conservatives on Thursday. If that vote is put off as a result of parliamentary manoeuvring, the Liberals, citing several scandals and accusations of government misconduct, might try to force a vote on a motion of non-confidence in the government Friday.

I'm just sick of the Harper Conservatives and their constant attack ads.

The news is just getting better and better for the Harper Government...

Committee finds Harper government in contempt

OTTAWA—A Commons committee has passed a report recommending the Conservative government should be found in contempt of parliament.

The historic move by the Commons procedure and house affairs committee could lead to a non-confidence vote, which could bring down the government and launch a spring election.

This is the first time in history that a government has been found in contempt.

The report, just a dozen pages long, concludes the government is in contempt for refusing to disclose requested documents detailing the full cost estimates for its crime bills, corporate tax cuts and a plan to buy stealth combat jets.

The report produced by the opposition-dominated committee concludes the government has failed to produce the documents it was ordered to hand over and that it has not provided a “reasonable excuse” for failing to do so.

The documents the government did provide, the report concludes, were unsatisfactory.

“This failure impedes the House in the performance of its functions and … the government’s failure to produce documents constitutes a contempt of Parliament,” the opposition-dominated committee wrote in the report tabled to the Commons on Monday.

The Conservative MPs on the committee attached a minority report arguing the majority report did not take into account the documents the government did provide.

The opposition MPs “who voted to pass the conclusions of the committee report gave only a cursory review of the information provided,” the minority report concludes. “Had they treated it seriously, they would have found detailed information that answered fully and directly the request of the motion.”

The committee is also considering whether to find International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda in contempt for misleading MPs on her decision to deny funding to a charitable organization critical of Israeli policies.

How much more evidence do the Canadians need before they wake up and vote this guy out of the office? :o
