Ignatieff won't bend on $3-billion ‘slush fund'

OTTAWA — Michael Ignatieff says he won't give the government a blank cheque to spend $3-billion to stimulate the flagging economy, even though his refusal could plunge the country into an election.

The Liberal Leader says he will not support creation of a special immediate-stimulus fund unless Prime Minister Stephen Harper agrees to provide some accountability for how the money is spent.

Mr. Harper has warned that the special fund is a matter of confidence and opposition parties will find themselves in an election if they won't support it.

But Mr. Ignatieff dismisses such threats as “junk” and says Mr. Harper must talk to Liberals and work out some resolution to the matter rather than drive Parliament “off the cliff” as he nearly did last fall.

MONTREAL—Jean Chrétien was recovering Saturday from a successful surgery to remove a subdural hematoma, doctors said.

“Currently he is doing extremely well,” said Dr. Jeff Golan, the physician who performed the operation at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital on Friday.

“Naturally we’re going to keep him under observation for another two or three days”

The 76-year-old former prime minister was suffering from a spontaneous subdural hematoma — a collection of blood between the skull and the brain that applies pressure on the brain.

The operation involved removing the blood that had built up on the right side of Chrétien’s skull.

Dr. Marc Afilalo, head of emergency at the hospital, said Chrétien’s daughter contacted him and said he was having some difficulty walking.

“He felt a slight weakness on the left side,” Afilalo told a news conference.

Chrétien was brought to the hospital from his home in Shawingan, Que., where he had tests and the subdural hematoma was detected.

“We were very shocked by the diagnosis, because we didn’t expect that diagnosis,” said Afilalo, noting that Chrétien didn’t exhibit many of the symptoms normally associated with the condition.

”He was totally lucid, totally alert and the only finding was a slight weakness of the left leg.”

Usually people’s cognitive functions are altered, with things like memory and state of consciousness affected, Afilalo added.

Chrétien is expected to be released from hospital in a few days, but he will have to slow down his schedule for a while, Golan said.

“His otherwise hectic lifestyle will have to wait for a few weeks, he is going to have to rest and avoid some of his otherwise regular activities.”

Chrétien was prime minister from 1993 to 2003.

The Conservatives got a lot of their people from the Reform Party and Alliance Party. Most people in those parties were from the religious right, and some of those people are now in positions of power in our government.

Personally I don't feel good with people of strong religious convictions running the country. The USA had a similar situation with George Bush Jr and the Republicans and we know how that turned out.

I live in Chuck Strahl's riding (Minister of Transport) and we have one of the highest number of churches per capita in Canada. When I first moved here, I found it amazing how many local people did not believe in evolution, believed the Earth was only a few thousand years old, believed the world would end within their lifetimes (the "end-times" thing), and believe in a literal Devil.

If you check out the biographies of some of the main Conservatives, there is a common thread: attend a religious college of some type, work in fairly ordinary jobs, become a member of the Conservative, Reform, or Alliance parties, get elected. It doesn't seem like an adequate background for a high position in government. The religious-right background explains some of the Conservatives agenda, such as expanding our prison system (like they did in the USA).

It's unfortunate the opposition parties are in disarray and not united, because that means the Conservatives win the next election. We'll be stuck with these bozos for another 10 years.

PMO apologizes for booting media from Ignatieff speech

The Prime Minister's Office has apologized for what it calls an overzealous misunderstanding, after staff hustled journalists away as Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff was about to speak.

The incident occurred at an event hosted by the Indian high commission in Gatineau, Que., on Friday, where both Ignatieff and Stephen Harper were in attendance.

Harper addressed a small gathering of journalists after the event, before staff members ushered reporters and camera crews away. The journalists, who were unaware Ignatieff was to speak next, complied.

The incident comes while Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is under fire over a fundraising letter that was sent out on parliamentary letterhead. A staff member was fired on Thursday after the letter was made public.

Leslie Church, Ignatieff's communications director, dismissed a claim that the snafu at Friday's event was a misunderstanding.

"It's an appalling abuse of power on a day when the government is under fire for using public resources to fund an ethnic media campaign to restrict the press from hearing the leader of the Opposition at a non-partisan, multicultural celebration," Church told The Canadian Press.

The event, organized by the High Commission of India in Ottawa, marked the launch of a celebration of the contributions of the Indian diaspora to Canadian society.

A press release sent earlier in the day from Ignatieff's office indicated he would be in attendance, but did not mention that he would be speaking.

The Prime Minister's Office first pointed out that they did not organize the event, but later issued an apology.

The PMO didn't even arrange the event and had no right to even ask the media to leave. Harper is a ing weasel.....if he ever gets a majority government he will destroy this country.

I truly hope that more and more people begin to realize this before it is too late.

so, Harper's staff screws up, and it's all Harper's fault?

unless you have direct proof that Harper ordered his staffs to shoo the media away...

That is the kind of behaviour I was reading about with reference to the Tea Party in the last round of congressional elections. One particular example that comes to mind was Joe Miller allowing a journalist to get detained by one of his security goons at a Q&A in Alaska.

His staff is a reflection of him....it doesn't matter if he gave the direct order or not.

not commenting on the incident in particular; however, when one is the head of an organization they are responsible for the actions of their staff... it's call the master-servant principal and it is a rather important part of our system of law... so yes, his staff screws up he is to blame.

Canada fighter planes to cost billions more-report

Reuters) - Canada's planned purchase of 65 fighter jets will cost billions more than government has projected, according to a report released on Thursday amid speculation the country will soon face an election.

Opposition parties seized on Parliamentary Budget Officer Kevin Page's report, saying it was evidence the Conservative government was misleading voters about the multibillion-dollar deal with Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N).

The budget watchdog's report also came a day after the Conservatives were reprimanded for refusing to release financial details of planned prison construction projects that the opposition also says will cost much more than the government maintains.

The budget office estimates it will cost C$29.3 billion ($30.1 billion) to build and maintain the 65 F-35 jets over the next 30 years, a significantly higher tag than C$16 billion to C$18 billion the government has forecast.

The planes are expected to cost C$9 billion to build, but the budget office said after reviewing historical information it determined the cost of maintaining the aircraft will be much higher than the government has publicly estimated.

The government said in July it planned to buy the aircraft, developed under the Joint Strike Fighter program, funded by the United States, Canada, Turkey, Britain, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Australia and the Netherlands.

The F-35s will replace Canada's CF-18s, which are due to end their working lives in about 2020. The first of the new aircraft would be delivered in 2016.

The main opposition Liberal Party said the report showed the government's cost claims were "bogus," and they renewed calls to cancel the Lockheed deal and put the fighter jet contract out to competitive bids.

"This is an unconscionable amount of money. The Conservatives have once again misled Canadians about the real cost of their agenda," Liberal Dominic Leblanc told reporters in Ottawa.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper downplayed the report, saying he was "not going to get into the lengthy debate on the numbers" and the F-35s was the only acceptable option to replace the CF-18s before they become too old to maintain.

"This is the only fighter available that serves the purposes that our air force needs," Harper said in Toronto.

Page said his office was not passing judgment on the operational merits of the F-35.

Page also said that because Canada has not signed a contract to buy the planes, it is not under any legal obligation to pursue the deal if it does not want to.

The Conservative government is scheduled to present its federal budget on March 22, and the country could be pushed into a spring election if the legislation is voted down.

The Conservatives hold only a minority of seats in the House of Commons and need the support of at least one of the three opposition parties to help pass legislation. The budget bill is always considered a matter of confidence, and its defeat would immediately trigger an election.

Is this man insane? seriously I dont understand how people can possibly support Harper and his politics..
