Real Detroit Goes Underground

Real Detroit Goes Underground
Fitter, Happier, More Productive

Every single week of the year, without fail, Real Detroit Weekly brings you the best of the best in entertainment and lifestyle news with a focus on the local music scene so sharp it cuts the competition like the axe of the executioner. So, it should be no surprise that Real Detroit is bringing back something we know you miss and dearly love. Formerly known as "The Underground Stage," — you know, the one that went missing last year, the one people complained about in previous years after being hailed as the coolest locale in DEMF's early ages — the space is now in our hands and will be know from here on out as The Real Detroit Stage. With the amazing and tireless help from the workoholics at Paxahau, RDW is resurrecting the stage with style and class for all you dedicated Detroiters — and so it's only fitting that from here on out it be known as The Real Detroit Stage.

Brainstorming with Thunder Audio, Paxahau took the sound system and did an entire redesign and added brand new production elements. "Sound has always been a concern when it comes to that particular stage," says Paxahau's Sam Fotias, "but we're pretty confident that we not only addressed the issue but exceeded people's expectations with this great space." With stacks of speakers, 76 or so cabinets and improvements in the roofing, techno heads will be overwhelmed with a sonic surprise upon entering the newly redesigned area with improved light shows and visual aesthetics. The Real D Stage will have the look and feel of an authentic Detroit party.

The underground area has long been a favorite to many DEMF partygoers, in fact, every time I hear the word DEMF, I am immediately transported back to 2001, the year I fell in love with the underground. As my friend and I snaked our way through the masses, we eventually found a spot on one of the side landings, perched above most of the crowd. It was packed, people were buzzing about the duo who were late to the stage: Autechre. I recall spotting every type of freak, including those polo and khaki pant "normals." The crowd quieted, the cave was dark, two Men In Black extras walked out and set two laptops on a table. In sync, they opened them up, looked at each other, looked at their computers and pressed the magic button. Sonic blip euphoria ensued and I remember thinking, "This is why Detroit's so in' cool."

If we're working on that logic, half the artists playing shouldn't be there. :wtf:
