$10/gallon is what we pay in most Western European countries .. Americans would get a heart attack with that figure on the displays :)

LMFAO thats awful, i feel so sorry for europeans. in ontario we pay about 1.28 a litre, and thats awful for us. when i first started driving gas was 65 cents a litre. im waiting for cars that run on 100% water or air and they are coming soon, but not quick enough.

My friend, this is easy to say when 90% of Western Europe's population is in urban areas. Public transportation, scooters, and even bicycles can get most Western Europeans to their regular destinations. When comparing a country in Europe which is about the size of a state in the USA, your opinion is rather skewed.
Sorry to say but I drive approx 750km on a weekly basis (that's 470 miles) of which 80% is commuting back & forth to work. Public transport can't replace the efficiency that I have with my car despite being in traffic for at least 2 hours daily. So I don't agree on that bit :)

I'm laughing at the appearance of the persona itself. Russian minor in college so I read all about... you.

A good portion of America was built around the exit ramps of Freeways and interstate highways and many Americans are forced to rely on their own cars for daily transportation, because of this. Public Transportation isn't well structured in most suburban areas. Many towns don't have the convenience of a train station, or the convenience to go a few miles on a scooter to run a few errands. Our governments allowed communities to be built based on the economic booms and individual's financial independence of the past. No thought was given into scenarios of recessions and high fuel costs.

We are now caught in a trap. Americans outside of the convenient urban public transportation systems are now forced to shell out more money for gas. On average, Americans spend 99% of their paycheck, and save 1%. Much of this was on the basics, such as food, gasoline, mortgage payments and other bills. The priorities have shifted greatly. Gasoline and food have all but destroyed the purchasing power of the average American. Many middle Americans are caught in a situation where they can't afford to buy a more fuel efficient car, because they are spending their money to fuel their current, less efficient car.

We are being forced to buy gas. We are being forced to shell out the extra cash for the increasing price of food. If we don't buy the gas, we cannot drive to work and get our next paycheck, which will buy more food and gas. We are in a vicious circle that will only end when the rich survive, and the middle classes are driven into the lower class. The gap between the rich and the poor are ever-widening, and the Oil companies are to blame.

10.1 Billion dollars. That is the 4th quarter profit of Exxon Mobil. Even when adjusted for inflation, these profits are still extraordinary. How does this happen? Not only should we blame the tax breaks Big Oil is receiving, but we should blame the blatant gouging of prices. No way should they be receiving record profits. If we are suffering, Big Oil should suffer as well. The turn of the 21st century has mirrored the turn of the 20th century. Big Business reigns supreme.

Nationalize Big Oil. Destroy the Bourgeoisie. Arrest Jay Rockefeller and all corrupt Oil men in our government. Sentence them to death. These are not politicians. These are lobbyists disguised as politicians. The proletariat shall rise up and defeat these demons and destroy the ruling class of America.

ing gas prices. I walk to the gym now instead of driving now. I realized that the amount of time it takes to park my car in the lot and go through traffic, I'm only saving 5 minutes by taking the car (really I timed both because I am that anal-retentive). Stupid car.

Don't give me that nonsense. Big Oil’s profits are up, but so are the taxes they pay. In 2006, that came to $90 billion — up 334% in just four years. Their profit margin was a massive 8.3%. For investors in the oil industry, an 8.3% return on investment doesn’t exactly show optimistic growth, especially when looking at pharmaceuticals (18.4%) and beverage makers (19.1%). Oil companies don't set the price, the market does. Nationalizing oil would mean having an inept ing government running something they aren't experts in. Look how awesome Medicare runs thanks to our govt. Dude you are brainwashed by the Russian system. The free market MINUS sick amounts of government regulation and control is the answer, not nationalizing and giving them more control. The oil companies actually perform a service, unlike the government who just takes what they want.

You Americans have it very cheap , if you had to pay our prices you all would be walking to work. Its big news in the United Kingdom and in Europe about the prices of fuel at the moment I drive a 1.2 litre engine and a full tank of fuel is around £40.00 / $80.00 for a 1.2litre Fiat Punto. I guess the average American SUV is 4-5litre engine so you would be paying about $300 to fill your tank.

At the moment Unleaded is about £1.14 a litre & Diesel is about £1.35 a litre each day it rises !

Driving a car in England is out of control.

Age 25 ,
Driving for 7 Years
No Accidents ,
Car Value £2000 / $4000
Engine 1.2 Fiat Punto

-----------------------
Insurance - £40 / $80 a month
Road Tax - £120 / $220 a year
MOT - £40 / $80 a year
Parking - £5 / $10 a day
Service - £50 / $100 a year
Fuel ( 30 miles a day average ) - £80 / $160 a month

Approx Total : £3000.00 or $6000.00

* For those driving a 4x4 e.g BMW X5 have to pay around £400 a year extra to the goverment which could be increasing next year, for those people working in London you would have to pay a daily congestion charge of £8.00 just to drive through, also you have other costs such as Repairs and those people on Finance.

I would get a Bus to Work or cycle but I would have to get 3 buses at strange times , cycling is out of the question as its 15 miles away and all motorway.
