people in Florida for example are screwed for sure without cars. The entire state is so spread apart and theres no transit system that can handle covering all the areas. |
Ding ding. I live in Florida and my drive to and from work every day is over 60 miles. And I walk as much as I can. I never get in my car during my lunch break, and I pack my own lunch to save money. The nearest grocery store is about 11 miles from my house, and over the past year food prices have risen so high even Chick-Fil-A raised the price for ICED TEA 60 cents! It doesn't cost any more to make that! Our food prices have risen so much. I pulled up reciepts the other day just for giggles... the price I paid for groceries 6 months ago was 61.45, the price I paid for the SAME items last week, was 92.63. That's a HUGE difference. Gas keeps rising, everything keeps rising, I can't afford it. |

Comparing China to the rest of the world is not a good contrast of how we should live in America and Europe...little thing called freedom. Dunno why u are so into public transit. Is it the environmental issue? I hope so, because people like their freedom and giving up their lifestyle to only be able to travel when the bus/train comes is going to be a big problem. As well as building enough trains/tracks, buses to cover the country is going to be a real problem and many many years away. Thats not practical. People will need a form of transport that they are in control of...simple as that. Only thing I can see is the switch to motorcycles and scooters, or some new cheap fuel technology that a combustion engine can burn or an electric car battery system with a very long life. I am with u on getting off oil and gasoline/diesel engines, but giving up your freedom of travel besides a bike is not going to work mate. |
Its not like we can only have one or the other. People should just use public transit MORE. And they are starting to. We need to build the networks further and make them more useful. If you want the freedom of driving you'll just have to pay more, because driving should have always been a luxury. |

I can tell you aren't at all versed on cars. The litre measurement on a cars engine has NOTHING to do with fuel efficiency in and of itself. It does have a direct correlation in terms of size and consumption going up but that is it. The measurement refers to OIL capacity. Your standard F1 engine can be 8 cylinders or even 16 cylinders, yet they are between 2 and 3 litre engines. ;) The size of your fuel tank is what dictates your fill up cost. An SUV usually has a tank size of around 18 US Gallons, which is around $75USD to fill up. My car has a 12gallon fuel tank, and it costs me about $40 to fill up. ;)

+1 I really think we need to make it harder to acquire a license, and the DMV costs higher. It would make people think twice about this . |

Sorry, but that is also wrong. It refers to the engine's displacement (the total volume of air/fuel mixture an engine draws in one cycle).

Your basic point remains true, though. |

Well I knew it was displacement, but I was told it was oil displacement. Well now I know. thanks! :) |
