I remember reading a few weeks ago in a thread on here about how twenty-somethings are struggling in cities. For all of you that live in big cities how much do you believe a person needs to make to live a rather normal life?
The reason I ask is because I have the potential for an amazing job that would make me happy but only pays $12 an hour at first but can go up to $14 after a few months. The job is close to Washington DC.
So, anyone make around 23,000-30,000 a year living in a city? If so, how hard is it? What is your quality of living? |
The DC area is not that bad. Where is this job?
HAVE A WEEKLY BUDGET! just have to make sure you follow your budget every day and you won't have a problem. Also, you will have to live with a roommate, maybe rent a room in a house. Check out MD for places, it tends to be better priced than VA, and there's also a better public transportation system.
Good luck! |

I'm considering going for a job in DC where I would make just under 50k a year before overtime, and I was thinking I'll be struggling. Thats with actually living in DC though, you could live further out, but then you would also have to have a car most likely.
Also, youre considering relocating for a $12 an hour job? |

when i was 18 i made a little over nine dollars an hour
550 for rent
50 dollars electric (ac off while at work)
39 dollars phone
10 dollars internet
thats six hundred a month just to live
$200 dollar car payment
$150 dollars for insurance
that mean the rest was for eating and enjoyment.
but some how or another i still managed to go to raves and spend excess of 50 dollars on crap plus ticket and still manage to eat out everyday. and get trashed all the time. |

Eh, it all depends on what sort of sacrifices you're willing to make. I lived in DC all of last year in a studio in a very nice neighborhood ($1100/month) on about $20,000/year (hourly wage of about 12/hr). Obviously I had to cut costs elsewhere, which mostly meant I stopped buying movies and music and relied on my local library rather than a Barnes and Noble. I still went out with friends a few days a week, but was mindful of how much I was spending. I ate cheaply (mostly oatmeal, lunch meat, and salads). I didn't feel like my standard of living was "low" at all, but I understand that everyone's standard is different.
Now I've moved out to VA and cut my rent by $400 - living with two roommates in a 3-bedroom apartment. It's not DC, but it has allowed me a few more luxuries.
If you look for an apartment in Silver Spring or Falls Church and commit to minimizing luxuries, you can live quite comfortably in DC with that job. Of course you should always be looking to upgrade job if you want to upgrade lifestyle, but that isn't a terrible entry-level job in this city where many entry-level positions work for free.
If you have any specific questions about DC, feel free to send me a PM. |

$400 in NYC? maybe if you're renting a closet in a crackhouse. |

Yah, the job is in Fairfax. Not actually in DC. Money isn't really important to me as long as I can live without struggling and enjoy my job. There is room for advancement in the company so that is why I want to relocate. It's a job with Mythic Entertainment, if you guys ever heard of the company that makes pc games. |
