The vice minister of trade in Japan recently stated that current market fundamentals support an oil price of about $60/barrel, with the remainder due to speculation among analysts and investors.

I do agree with this. All I wanted to interject is that oil and resources in general were pretty cheap for a while, maybe a little too cheap. Yes, gas is over inflated now because of specs.

Although I do believe North America got a lot of things right when it comes to the standard of living, we also got a lot of things wrong. Gigantic suburbs and massive cars may have been fine for the last 50 years, but thats all they were ok for. Now we have massive cars nobody wants, and massive areas nobody can walk out of, and people who can't walk. It's too bad that NA looked at it this way. Maybe we could have had some better urban planning if the price of gas, or energy had been higher in the first place.

When the barrel was between 10 and 20$ for most of the 90's (9$ in 99!), it's not too difficult to take advantage of this and get the big car and the big house/lot in the burbs... it just made sense.

It's easy now to play the bench manager and say all this is stupid... too bad all the best politicians that we could have are stuck posting on TA. :p

That is the exact flawed thinking I am getting at. Just because it was cheap, why did it need to be wasted? People did not need SUVs then any more than they need them now. We would have been fine with smaller cars.

It's easy to make a choice when it comes to driving a car, which I did almost 10 years ago. I have chosen to forgo getting a car precisely because of the associated costs. Conservation always made sense, you just had to think about it.

The one place I do use a tonne of oil is in the goods that I buy. I buy a lot of electronics which consume power in their manufacturing and usage.

How much did that cost you? Sounds like a good idea for when I move downtown. I love the idea of free parking.

not too great on surviving accidents though

yeah, the article seemed kinda iffy, but on my way home tonight around midnight, I saw the gas prices being reduced to 131.5 in Mississauga at Erin Mills Parkway and 403!!! I guess the website link might be effective at least!

I don't think you can honestly convince anybody that a bike that revs to 10k+ is good on gas, no matter how small the engine.

that's inconsistent with free market theory. it's about demand and supply; who are we to say what people need or not?

On Motoring 2008 in Kenzie's corner he discussed how the market corrects the demand for SUVs by separating those who want it as a luxury vs. those who need for bigger families and have things to tow. The gas prices will weed out those who shouldn't have one while the advances in fuel efficiency will keep the ones who need one in the market.
