Canada is always anxious to be a big player on the world stage.
But not like this.
The beheading of an apparent complete stranger on board a Greyhound bus in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba Wednesday night has made headlines around the planet. The story has been featured in Britain, Ireland, Australia, The Netherlands, Hong Kong and of course, the U.S.
International agencies like The Associated Press, AFP and Reuters have also spread the details worldwide.
It was the number one item on the BBC's website and it placed second on CNN's online counterpart. Even bloggers have picked up the gruesome tale, adding their own sometimes eerie and speculative comments to the mix.
"I found it scary seeing as how I used to take Greyhounds to Canada!!!" one wrote. "I doubt I ever will again, especially now."
Others were critical of the already traumatized passengers who watched the incident unfold. "37 people didn't have anything to throw at him? 37 people couldn't have over powered one guy with a knife?" an outraged poster asks. "Isn't this the same mentality that allowed 2 or 3 idiots with box cutters to take out the Twin Towers?"
"No handguns allowed in Canada, we know. But no woman had a purse to bonk him on the head?" another queries. "No one bothered to throw a can of diet Coke at the guy's head? Who was on the bus? The Old Ladies' Home and Gardening Society?"
And still a third called Canadians "panzies" (sic) for not doing anything to stop it.
But experts remind the commentators they weren't there at the time and can't understand the shock and surprise that may have rendered those onboard numb and unable to act, while worried about saving their own lives.
Others seemed determined to inject conspiracy theories into the mix, implying it was a terror attack.
"Winnipeg is only a few miles from the U.S. border," a reader maintains. "The idea was to get as close to the U.S. as he could, if not get into the U.S., then engage in the attack in front of a busload of people. This was another act of radical Islamic terrorism on North American soil."
"Beheading is the trademark of al-Qaeda."
But while authorities here admit they don't yet know the motive for the murder, they're adamant terror wasn't behind it.
There have also been many lurid headlines surrounding the unthinkable act. "Bus slasher beheads passenger," proclaimed Sky News in Britain.
"Killer taunts police with decapitated head," shouted a banner in the Sunday Times of Australia.
But of all the sometimes over-the-top coverage, perhaps nothing beats the totally unfounded attention-getter printed at Thai media outlet Thaindian.com, which was apparently spawned by an early report from a Canadian source. "Beheading on bus shocks Canada," it began. "Cannibalism feared."
Officials say there was absolutely no sign that a desire for human flesh was in any way involved but the gruesomeness of the tale is bound to keep foreign media interested - and hopefully getting more of their facts correct as new revelations emerge. |

| Hahaha, oh those brave Brits. I'm sure that when a guy on their subway starts repeatedly stabbing another passenger with a large hunting knife they're all going to throw their puny bodies at him in order to save the guy that's already dead. |

Wow...I'm appauled at what some of those people had to say. They have NO idea what it would have been like to be in that situation. The one guy in the interview said that people were throwing up and in shock...it's not something you see everyday. Your first instinct would naturally be to get away.
They said this guy had a rambo size knife too. I'd be pretty scared to take any chances at trying to get it away from him. Trying to stop him is likely to get a bunch of other people hurt, and if he were to break free...well he'd sure be ing pissed. Same with if you threw something at him. Okay, you throw a popcan...a) you hit him, don't hurt him and now he's mad...b) you don't hit him, and now he's mad you even tried...c) you startle him and again...he's mad.
The one guy in the interview said that himself, the bus driver and the truck driver tried to see what they could do to help....but when there's a derranged guy chopping someone up, and you're in complete shock, it's hard to think of something to do b/c you're scared, and just don't KNOW what to do. |

I bolded those statements because it's all nice and dandy how they're all brave behind their keyboards :rolleyes:
there's no way in hell anyone would try to intervene
unless it was someone they know I guess? there was a story recently where the guy protected his Mom from a thief with a knife, he might lose his thumb because of all the deep cuts he got in the process |

Yea its doubtful a 'bonk' with a purse of a popcan to the head is gonna have much effect on someone pumped full of adrenaline repeatedly stabbing someone. Additionally they did come back once they had gotten some makeshift weapons, and managed to keep him on the bus. |

LOL @ them thinking that this is related to terrorism b/c beheading is the trademark of Al Qaeda. As well as people being afraid to take greyhounds to Canada :rolleyes: Unlikely it would have happened on a plane, but there are other forms of transportation (i.e. train) which this could have also happened on. So I guess they should be afraid of taking any sort of public transportation. |

speaking of planes - every time I fly and I get metal utensils, I always have this sneaky idea in my head that it would so easy for some freak to totally create a hostage situation with a butter knife! |
