Except they were much more extreme.

Volunteering has been a very fulfilling experience for me. And to get something out of it? Profit!

sure... though this nigga's only been at it for 4 days... after 4 years, who knows?

i know it pisses you off, but i'm starting to think this man might have some socialist, or at the very least marxist, ideas up his sleeve. not that i say it like it's a bad thing, there's a lot of good that can come out of spreading responsibilities among the people, as well as re-distributing the wealth of the upper class (taken through taxation) among the poor in form of health care and welfare.

i don't even know if that's where this is all going, or if we'll ever get there. but i guess in 4 years we'll learn what he's up to.

i'm not calling the man a socialist by any means, he has a lot of other ideas and opinions that are way off that scale. however some ideas being tossed around definitely have some roots in that particular political philosophy.

I wouldn't disagree at all. We do not know what will happen, but until it does we can't treat it as if it is all doom and gloom either.

Also, just because someone has a small few socialist policies (if you get down to the nitty gritty, almost everyone does in some form or fashion) that doesn't make him a socialist by any means. He just has certain views on when we should take care of our own. Which on some level I am okay with, but there is a point at which it is impossible.

completely agree. like i said, i'm not saying it's a bad thing to pick and choose from whatever source his heart desires. to completely call him one thing (communist or whatever) or another is just sheer ignorance.

i just really hope that everything works out in the end and this country is back to a somewhat stable situation. i know nothing can ever be perfect.

Couldn't agree more. :)

Though I don't have much time in college and definitely wouldn't have had time in HS, I think it's a good idea, and something I could imagine myself making time for if it ever happened.

Though I think there should be a wide variety of choices in terms of what to volunteer for, so that people can pick an area that's enjoyable, or at least compatible. Random assignment (like the 'brigades' my parents went to as students in Bulgaria) would make for some miserable volunteers.

Though arguably it could be very character-building to do something out of your comfort zone. For example, if a skinny math nerd who wants to volunteer to teach math to inner city kids gets sent to help build houses somewhere.

Of course, government mandated character-building would probably not be appealing to too many people
