Well, mostly I just didn't show up, but when I did... yeah, I was pretty disruptive.

Come to think of it, I did that too. :/

Not that I am opposed to this in theory, if the federal government mandates it then I will be. This is a state issue, just like abortion, gay marriage, health care, etc. What is the point in having states if the federal government mandates everything?

I am so sick of hearing this. So many people say this, but it has already been made a federal issue with DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) and has therefore been made not just a state issue.

Also, his plan is not to mandate it, but make it voluntary while rewarding you for it.

If the state can't compel students to say the pledge of allegiance, arguably it can't make them go clean parks either.

13th Ammendement anyone? "Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

When this service program was mention during the campaign it sounded quite voluntary. There was even a financial incentive promised. What a difference an election makes.

Ok heres where you lazy folks "shaka when the walls fell" at your logic. 100 hours of community service per year while in college is NOT a bad thing. there are 52 weeks in a year and you only have to do 100 hours. That's 1.92 hours/week of volunteering your time to better the US as a whole. I am already volunteering 4Hrs/week of my time to better various organizations operational functions. Its not that hard.

You could easily argue that homework or even any schoolwork at all are also forms of "involuntary servitude." But I think the point to remember is that we commonly accept the compulsion of children but do not (in most cases) accept the compulsion of adults. Kids' rights are limited in lots of other ways, too, of course: they cannot buy guns or alcohol, they cannot vote, they cannot sign contracts, and so on.

Good deal. Better than national service!

What do you think of this idea?

we already did something like that in high school. wouldn't be a big deal if it was implemented in college. america is a bit strange in that people are so distant. it's likely because of the rampant capitalism and the car culture.

Exactly. 1-2 hours a week for 4K a semester. In!

4K for your first year of college, actually

I only needed 1 hour of community service to graduate highschool.

So I did what any person would do .. I googled "blood donor community service essay"

Copy.. Paste..

That counts as 2 hours. Never once gave blood in my life. (most cuz I'm small and scared and I had just gotten pierced)
