Huh? From the link you provided, it mentions nothing of requiring college students to volunteer.

I mean, the draft seems kind of foolish too -- if I were drafted, I'd just betray the side that drafted me, preferably in the most dramatic and destructive way possible. Basically, if someone tries to force me to do something, I try to make sure the result is worse for them than if they had just left me alone. I guess that's good; the world needs people like that. And maybe on balance, the obedient outnumber the contrary enough that you get a net benefit. I'll never understand those people, though. |
Right, but this is only for students, so you can't really compare it to a draft. Say you're doing a college degree which requires X elective credits unrelated to your field for completion - would you sabotage those courses? |

As a requirement though, does it mean you simply will not pass college should you fail to do the 100 hours of community service?
I'm not ok with this sort of moral indoctrination - if community service is such a noble ing deed worthy of people's time, then they should be spurred to do it upon their own volition, as good deeds are their own reward, no?
Further, this is somewhat of a discredit of the academic process. Forced subjugation to society is not mentally liberating at all, so why the should it be a requirement to be recognized with an academic achievement such as a college diploma?
A friend of mine is a 22 year-old single mom. She works 2 full-time jobs and goes to college full time as well to provide for herself and her child. How is she going to find time to do this sort of thing? I realize it's not a monumental requirement, but if she has to cut hours out of her work, she risks losing her job, as well as being forced to depend more and more on social programs such as welfare and food stamps and that sort of thing merely to make it by. |

High school yes, University no.
Kids have plenty of time to do this. University student on the other hand do have free time, but a tonne more responsibilities. Plus they are adults and can contribute to society in a different way. |
