Well architecture and civil engineering is one thing, while urbanism and city planning are completely different. I haven't checked out the books he mentioned either, but I've had many a class in school that uses Dubai as an example of "what NOT to do." There should be a balance of things that look cool AND work. |
That's a great book. Since you're an architectural student i highly recommend it. The book eventually may be part of the urban design portion of your curriculum, however, i highly recommend the book for anyone with an interest in urban planning. |

So what if Dubai has some nice buildings? Those buildings lack a connection with people, which is one of the key elements that makes architecture truly great. |
+1.... Downtown Jersey City's a mini-version/micro-cosm of DUBAI, if you get what I mean. |

i don't know about that; I understand what you mean though. A major difference is that DT JC is actually densely populated. Outside of the highrises on washington, there are actually beautiful brownstones with small corner shops. Van vorst park on york street is absolutely beautiful. The brownstones surround the park on all four sides add so much character to the park. I will admit though, the new high rise building complexes (which seem to always have two towers) haven't encourages a vibrant street scape. However, as more building are erected I think that may come along considering each new building has commercial and retail space on the bottom floors.
One major way to improve the street scape would be to narrow the streets like they are in hoboken, and enlarge the side walks. Neither columbus ave nor washinton ave need to be 4 to 6 lane roads. Columbus could probably be narrowed to one lane each way, with small gardens or green space lining the sidewalks where the road once stood. Washington would be an even better candidate for redeveloped streets. The median could be eliminated in some spots, the road narrowed to barely fit two lanes, and the sidewalks enlarged just how i described for columbus.
urban planning and design issues are a huge hobby of mine. i was thinking about going to UPenn for design prior to law school. |

Cocoon is awesome awesome! Met up with a few German TAs there last year the night before heading to I <3 Techno (thanks LunaSeA for connecting me w/them :) ). Incredibly artfully designed right down to the spacy outfits the dancers wear. Even the way the dancers were dancing was really artful and kind of out there (upbeat Kabuki theater is the best I can describe it). The mirrors in the bathrooms that turn into LCD video displays when you turn on the faucet to wash your hands totally caught me off guard. Pretty neat that they've got music sampling stations inside the place. I won't even get into the restaurants or awesome staff. Just know that Cocoon Club is the reason I won't set foot in Pacha NYC ever again. Well, actually Pacha is the reason I won't set foot in Pacha again, but Cocoon helped. Kind of had an "Oh, so THIS is what a megaclub is supposed to be like.." experience there, as it was my first overseas clubbing experience.
Met a girl from Hamburg at Cassy's set @ Cielo over the weekend who mentioned that the current version of Cocoon is a fairly new incarnation of a previous Cocoon. Is that true? Anyone know how long the first one had been around for??

a man of your position  Before you become too pompous, perhaps you should brush up on your english skills. A man of your stature should have equally impressive linguistic skills.
In any event, urbanism (and urban planning) is about the development of communities and the use of land. It draws on architecture, land use, transportation planning, social patterns, and more generally on the interaction between people and places. A place like Dubai can have great architecture, but be disastrously planned, which appears to be the case. Great architecture is of minimal importance if it is not optimally utilized and fully incorporated into its greater surroundings.
So what if Dubai has some nice buildings? Those buildings lack a connection with people, which is one of the key elements that makes architecture truly great (which isn't to say its the only element). |
Mastering two languages both verbally & grammatically takes time maestro.
Pompous? :stongue: That's quite the word. I'm meticulous at what I do, fanciful & lenient in some way of the mind but my character as an entirety is eccentric.
Back on subject, so what is your point of view in terms of Dubai aglomeration? What are those key elements? Natural resources?
I pointed out that Dubai is routinized by rich dogs. Rich dogs have characters? |
