Ok. I will give these a try, but it's hard finding fantasy books with not so generic 'kingdom has to be saved by hero' blah blah blah. Almost like trance, many fantasy books have become. |
Yeah i know what you mean. The Weinberg ones are not like that, you might enjoy those. I should look to see if i still have them laying around my parents place. I'm pretty sure they are out of print now so they might be more expensive and harder to track down.
It's too bad that White Wolf stopped publishing Fantasy. They always had quality books. |

Istanbul - Orphan Pamuk
Money - Martin Amis
Also looking for one funny book. Can anyone recommend one? |
Ak! I have great memories of Money. Really enjoyable although Martin Amis isn't exactly an easy author to read. Most enjoyable book of his I've read (among Time's Arrow, The Information (#2), Night Train, and The Rachel Papers).
I've got a copy of Naked by David Sedaris on my bedside table I didn't get to finish in the hospital, so a couple of days in BFN over the holidays would be the perfect time to finish it off. |

me too! i needed something light after my 2 month attempt at slogging through "100 years of solitude". |
Did you actually get through it? I read about 1/3 of it once and gave up. I picked it up again a year later, read the whole thing (although it took me a while), and it ended up being one of the best books I've ever read. The way the novel builds (or deteriorates) is incredible.
The names are so damn hard to keep up with though. |

+1. Really helps you visualize and understand the consquences of such unbridled greed. Great read! |

what can I say? i'm a troublemaker :p
like i said, 'traditional' fantasy books doesn't do much for me
i did enjoy dave duncan's stuff though. and harry turtledove's sword of the legion series. also krispos of videssos series which just got a reprint
been looking for stuff that's more history based (meaning, sans magic) 'fantasy'. David Gemmell's Troy series (based on, as you can guess, the story of Troy) is really good. Bernard Cornwell's series about Alfred the Great which starts with the Last Kingdom is quite enjoyable as well, if you can ignore his utter bias against Christianity (Jamie would enjoy that). David Drake and Eric Flint's Belisarius series just got a reprint. A bit of alternate history is, but it's well written. Guy Gabriel Kay - Lions of Al-Rassan is good. C.J Murphy - Queen's Bastard I also liked.
All of the above have a lot of sword fighting and politicking stuff. All it really missing is the magic stuff. |

also I reaaaaally urge everyone to read "Time traveler's wife".. it's such a fantastic book! |
I am with you on that. I am making a few friends read it over the break before the movie comes out (early 2009 sometime I think) because I just don't see the movie being able to live up to the book. |

Holiday reading... yeah I'll be reading all my manuals for all my electronics.
MacBook Pro
Canon Printer
Gears of War 2, NHL + FIFA 09
Blackberry Bold
Ironically enough I got all today. Except for the games, that was on the weekend.
Hopefully I can get a few more other things for I want from Christmas.
In terms of actual reading I'd love to finish my Harry Potter book I started reading last year. Apparently it's a good read... |
