I am with you on that. I am making a few friends read it over the break before the movie comes out (early 2009 sometime I think) because I just don't see the movie being able to live up to the book.

my fear as well :) although Rachel McAdams is great! I'm sure she'll do a great job:)

Eric Bana was a fantastic King Henry in The Other Boleyn Girl!

Did you actually get through it? I read about 1/3 of it once and gave up. I picked it up again a year later, read the whole thing (although it took me a while), and it ended up being one of the best books I've ever read. The way the novel builds (or deteriorates) is incredible.

The names are so damn hard to keep up with though.

no. :( i got about halfway through, but i was waiting weeks in between reading it because it required concentration and i wasn't in the mood, so whenever i picked it up again, i was even more lost. the family chart at the beginning doesn't help either, when everyone has the same name! it got to the point where i didn't even care what was going on. everyone i've spoken to has said similar things: they had to read it a few times to get what was going on, it took them 8 months to read, etc. it shouldn't be that much of a struggle! i may try again later. i did really like the quirkiness of it though.

Rachel, you should! :) I shed a few tears at the end and re-read the last chapter at least 3 times :) it's just such an amazing story all together... modern Romeo & Juliet story almost!

ladies we should meet up and trade books! I read mine too fast and then have nothing to do with them!

Its f'ing hilarious. Also fascinating, in that he outlines in detail the birth of the mortgage-securities market and the attitudes of the guys in those days who saw it as a brilliant, foolproof cash-cow.

Interestingly enough, the narrator of Gatsby, Nick Carraway, is also a bond salesman living in an age of material excess and moral degradation... I didn't intend to read them together but it's a wonderful coincidence.
